Tigers sent LHP Macay McBride outright to Triple-A Toledo.
McBride was supposed to compete for a bullpen spot this spring, but he's not yet all of the way back from Tommy John surgery. He's expected to accept the minor league assignment, and he could be a factor come May or June. Fri, Mar 20, 2009 02:11:00 PM

According to the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers have "backed off" their throwing schedule for Macay McBride, who's 11 months removed from Tommy John elbow surgery.

Manager Jim Leyland said Thursday that he's still hoping to give McBride a chance to start in the future, but he needs to build up arm strength first and may do so in the minors.

Tigers agreed to terms with LHP Macay McBride on a one-year contract.

The Tigers wanted to move McBride back to the rotation last season, but he got hurt in his very first start for Triple-A Toledo and underwent Tommy John surgery. The hope is that he'll be ready to compete for a bullpen job in spring training. First, he'll probably need some innings in the minors at the start of the year.

Macay McBride will undergo surgery to fix a torn ligament in his left elbow and will be out for the rest of the season.

McBride, 25, went 0-1 with a 6.11 ERA in 20 appearances with the Tigers last season. He should be ready by spring training next year.

Tigers LHP Macay McBride has been diagnosed with a stretched ligament.

McBride will likely wind up on the Triple-A disabled list, although he hasn't decided how to treat the injury, so it's not clear how much time he'll miss. He had been working on transitioning from relief pitcher to starter.

Tigers optioned LHP Macay McBride and RHP Armando Galarraga to Triple-A Toledo; optioned RHP Rick Porcello to Single-A Lakeland; reassigned RHP Jeff Gerbe, C Joe Bowen, C Dusty Ryan, C James Skelton, 1B Jeff Larish, IF Danny Worth, OF Matt Joyce, OF Wilkin Ramirez and OF Clete Thomas to minor league camp.

McBride had the best shot at making the major league roster, but it was pretty clear he was headed to Triple-A all along. He'll continue to transition from the bullpen to a starting role. Porcello, a 19-year-old, put together a solid spring before being optioned to Class-A ball, allowing one run in 5 2/3 innings.

The Tigers expect to have Macay McBride begin the season as a part of Triple-A Toledo's rotation.

The Braves shifted McBride to the pen in 2005, but his command slipped and he was a disappointment as both a middle reliever and a specialist. "I think his stuff is suited to start," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "I think he'll use his pitches more when he starts."

Tigers optioned LHP Macay McBride to Triple-A Toledo.

McBride got off to a nice start after being acquired from the Braves, but he gave up six runs in his last two appearances, taking his ERA from 3.64 to 4.96. Better command remains a must for him.

Tigers acquired LHP Macay McBride from the Braves for LHP Wilfredo Ledezma.

The Braves are moving McBride even though he had pitched quite a bit better since returning from the minors. He opened the year by walking 11 batters in three innings, getting him sent to Triple-A. Since being recalled last month, he had a 3.00 ERA and a 14/4 K/BB ratio in 12 innings. Lefties were hitting just .160 against him. The Tigers will use him in more of a specialist role, while Ledezma was typically utilized as a middle reliever. McBride is talented enough to be quite a bit of use if his continues to show decent command.

Braves recalled LHP Macay McBride from Triple-A Richmond.

McBride had a 3.13 ERA and a 24/7 K/BB ratio in 23 innings since being sent down last month. Five of his seven appearances were starts, but he's expected to resume working out of the pen in the majors.

Macay McBride made his second start for Triple-A Richmond on Saturday and pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings.

It doesn't look like the Braves are planning on bringing McBride back as a starter. Instead, they're hoping the longer outings will help with his command issues. He has a 0.96 ERA in 9 1/3 innings for Richmond, but he has walked six in the process.

Braves optioned LHP Macay McBride to Triple-A Richmond.

McBride walked 11 batters in 2 2/3 innings over his last four appearances, so this had to happen. He'll be back as soon as he gets straightened out.

While it's not in the Braves' immediate plans, manager Bobby Cox said Macay McBride may someday get another chance to start.

"We'll see what we need now," Cox said. "But with that kind of stuff ... Man, he's shown unbelievable improvement. He's even hard for the catchers to catch." Unfortunately, McBride ceased being a sleeper saves candidate with the acquisition of Rafael Soriano and Mike Gonzalez. He might have to start games in order to amass any fantasy value.

Braves activated LHP Macay McBride from the 15-day disabled list.

McBride, back from a strained forearm, should eventually settle in as the top lefty in the Atlanta pen. That might not make him a candidate for saves, but NL-only leaguers will still want to keep an eye on him.
