Cubs designated OF Cole Gillespie for assignment.

Cole Gillespie went 3-for-5 with a couple of doubles and an RBI against the Dodgers on Friday.

Gillespie was hoping for a Nate Schierholtz trade to show what he can do. As is, most of his at-bats will come against lefties, so he's probably not going to have any NL-only value. His RBI today was his first since the Cubs picked him up at the All-Star break.

Cole Gillespie will join the Cubs' roster on Sunday.

Claimed off waivers on Saturday from the Giants, Gillespie will bolster the depth of a thin Chicago outfield unit. He may even steal sporadic at-bats with David DeJesus sidelined and Nate Schierholtz banged up.

Gillespie was designated for assignment earlier this week and appeared in just three games with the Giants, but batted .277/.361/.455 with nine home runs, 31 RBI, and seven stolen bases at the Triple-A level. With David DeJesus sidelined, Gillespie will provide outfield depth.

Giants signed OF Cole Gillespie to a minor league contract.

The 28-year-old is coming off a strong season at Triple-A Reno where he hit .308/.390/.494 with 13 homers, 66 RBI and 11 stolen bases. The former third round pick possesses a nice blend of power and speed and should compete for a reserve outfield job with the defending champions. He could be worth a look as a late-round flyer in extremely deep fantasy formats.

Cole Gillespie hit a grand slam in the ninth inning of Wednesday's loss to the Dodgers.

He teed off on Ramon Troncoso. That's one way to make your case for the postseason roster. With just eight at-bats to his name, however, it's an honor Gillespie is unlikely to receive. He'll compete for a bench spot next spring.
