Castillo wasn't even arbitration-eligible this offseason, but the move makes him a free agent. The 22-year-old right-hander posted an awful 6.36 ERA and 37/23 K/BB ratio over 52 1/3 innings this past season with Double-A Frisco.

Rangers prospect Fabio Castillo has begun trying to walk without the protective boot on his left foot.

Castillo is still recovering from a broken bone and probably won't step atop a mound for another several weeks. The 22-year-old righty finished with strong numbers between stays at Single-A and Double-A last season. He has some promise and may climb to Triple-A by the end of 2011 if all goes well this year.

The Rangers added the young right-hander to their 40-man roster after he posted a 2.11 ERA and 67/30 K/BB ratio over 55 1/3 innings between High-A Bakersfield and Double-A Frisco last season. He was recently ranked as the organization's No. 23 prospect by Baseball America.
