Twins signed OF Joe Benson to a minor league contract.

Benson came up in the Twins organization and made it up to the majors in 2011, but he's fallen on hard times the last few years. The 27-year-old hit .248/.351/.361 between Double- and Triple-A with the Mets and Braves in 2015 and also spent some time in independent ball.

Mets signed OF Joe Benson to a minor league contract.

Benson was released by the Braves in mid-June after hitting just .246/.346/.331 with no homers at Triple-A Gwinnett. He'll look to get his career back on track at Double-A Binghampton.

Braves released OF Joe Benson.

Benson nearly made the Opening Day roster with a strong showing in spring training but then went on to hit just .246/.346/.331 with no homers at Triple-A Gwinnett. The 27-year-old will now try to catch on elsewhere.

Braves reassigned OF Joe Benson to minor league camp.

The former Twins prospect was in a battle down to the wire to earn a reserve outfielder spot on the team's Opening Day roster. He'll provide additional depth at Triple-A Gwinnett and should get an opportunity with the Braves at some point during the upcoming season.

Joe Benson went 4-for-5 and delivered a walk-off RBI single in Thursday's win over the Orioles.

All four of Benson's hits were singles, but hey, he'll take it. The former Twins prospect could be playing his way onto the team, as he homered off of Cole Hamels Wednesday and now has seven hits in 17 at-bats this spring.

Joe Benson homered off Cole Hamels in Wednesday's loss to the Phillies.

The Braves don't have a real backup in center for Eric Young Jr. after sending Eury Perez down, so they're weighing keeping Benson, even though he was an afterthought until a few days ago (he had a total of nine spring plate appearances before getting six the last two days). Once a quality prospect in the Twins chain, Benson hasn't really showed much offensively since 2011. He shouldn't be an option in NL-only leagues even if he does make the Braves.

Braves signed OF Joe Benson to a minor league contract.

The 26-year-old outfielder hasn't seen time in the big leagues since he was a member of the Twins in 2011. He spent the 2014 campaign in the Marlins organization, slashing .259/.361/.403 with 10 homers, 62 RBI and 15 steals in 129 games between Double-A Jacksonville and Triple-A New Orleans.

Marlins signed OF Joe Benson to a minor league contract.

The agreement includes an invitation to spring training. The 25-year-old hasn't been in the majors since a 21-game stint with the Twins in 2011. Benson was a top-100 prospect before 2011 and 2012 but has struggled to hit for average at the minor league level. He'll have a shot to win a bench job with the Marlins this spring.

Rangers sent OF Joe Benson outright to Triple-A Round Rock.

Benson was designated for assignment on Sunday but has cleared waivers and will remain in the organization. He's batted just .205/.293/.394 with five homers at the Double-A level this season.

Rangers designated OF Joe Benson for assignment.

Benson was claimed off waivers from the Twins in late May, but has struggled at Double-A Frisco. Through 37 games, he hit .205/.293/.394 with five homers, 16 RBI and three stolen bases. He's still talented enough to where there should be another club willing to take a chance on him.

Rangers claimed OF Joe Benson off waivers from the Twins; assigned him to Double-A Frisco.

Benson struggled mightily at Triple-A Rochester this season, batting just .192 with one home run in 42 games. The Twins no longer viewed Benson as worthy of a 40-man roster spot and needed to clear room for Saturday's starter P.J. Walters.

Twins optioned OF Joe Benson to Triple-A Rochester.

Benson was competing for the center field job this spring but batted just .154/.267/.288 over 17 games. The gig is expected to go to Aaron Hicks. The twins also reassigned Luis Perdomo to minor league camp.

Joe Benson struck out four times in five plate appearances Thursday against the Red Sox.

Aaron Hicks has already blown past Benson in the center-field battle, which would still be the case even if Benson were hitting .300 rather than .150. Benson's future is likely as a reserve anyway. Barring an injury ahead of him, he's destined for some more Triple-A time.
Thu, Mar 7, 2013 05:18:00 PM

Twins recalled OF Joe Benson from Triple-A Rochester.

Benson batted just .202/.288/.336 this season while missing a good chunk of the season due to hamate bone surgery. He'll have a shot to make the roster next spring.
