Brewers purchased the contract of LHP Juan Perez from Triple-A Nashville.

Perez was hospitalized with a collapsed lung during spring training and failed to make the Brewers Opening Day roster. He has 4.79 ERA in parts of three seasons in the majors.

Juan Perez threw a bullpen session Monday for the first time since being hospitalized for a collapsed lung two weeks ago.

"He threw a bullpen [Monday] -- it went real well, and he's accelerating fast," said Brewers manager Ron Roenicke. "He had a smile on his face and he felt good." Perez, a non-roster invitee, is scheduled to throw another side session Thursday and Roenicke said it's still "to be determined" whether the 33-year-old southpaw has a chance at making the Opening Day roster.

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Tuesday that he's not sure when Perez will be able to resume throwing. The lefty seems unlikely to crack the Brewers' Opening Day roster, no matter how quickly he's able to recover.

Perez was in consideration for the bullpen as a non-roster invitee, but is now looking at missing extended time this spring. "It's a tough break for him," manager Ron Roenicke said. "He was throwing the ball great. You always feel for the guy when he's doing that well and he's got a chance and then something happens."

The deal includes a spring training invite. Perez, 33, made eight appearances with the Phillies this past season, but spent the majority of the year with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, posting a 5.70 ERA and 53/25 K/BB ratio over 36 1/3 innings. He'll likely function as organizational depth.

Phillies purchased the contract of LHP Juan Perez from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

He'll replace the injured Jose Contreras on the active roster. Perez, 32, has a 5.17 ERA over 24 major league appearances, all with the Pirates. He had a 3.52 ERA and 41/21 K/BB ratio over 30 2/3 innings with the IronPigs. Look for him in middle relief.

Phillis signed LHP Juan Perez to a minor league deal.

Perez was terrific for Triple-A Albuquerque in the Dodgers organization this past season, posting a 2.96 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 10.5 K/9 rate. The former Pirate has control issues at times and is now 32 years old, but he'll be given a shot to win a bullpen spot in spring training.

Pirates re-signed LHP Juan Perez to a minor-league contract.

The Pirates released Perez this spring, but indicated all along that they'd likely re-sign him to a minor league deal. He's dealing with damage to his elbow ligament, but it's possible he'll be able to avoid surgery.
