Rockies and INF Jonathan Herrera avoided arbitration Wednesday by agreeing to a one-year, $900,000 contract.

The two sides settled at the midpoint of arbitration figures that were exchanged last week. Herrera was arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter after batting .262/.317/.351 with three home runs, 12 RBI and a .688 OPS in 251 plate appearances in 2012. He figures to serve as a utility infielder for the Rockies in 2013.

Rockies placed INF Jonathan Herrera on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 16, with an infection in his left wrist.

"He contracted some type of infection, I know they did a culture, but I don't know anything further than that," manager Jim Tracy said. "He went to the hospital around 2 a.m. this morning; he was very, very concerned about it." Herrera should be ready for activation when first eligible.

Jonathan Herrera went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases in a win Saturday against the Rangers.

Six Rockies had at least two hits in the 11-7 victory. Herrera, activated from the DL Friday and batting leadoff, swiped his first two bags of the season and raised his average by 11 points, to .250. With Troy Tulowitzki out for the foreseeable future, Herrera could carve out enough at-bats to become relevant in deeper NL-only formats.

His presence means Marco Scutaro won't have to carry the load completely at shortstop while Troy Tulowitzki (groin) is sidelined. Herrera originally landed on the disabled list with a hamstring strain a month ago, but his return was delayed due to right shoulder soreness.

Jonathan Herrera (hamstring) is dealing with soreness in his right shoulder.

Herrera's hamstring doesn't appear to be an issue anymore, but now he's got the shoulder to deal with. He did have an MRI, which determined nothing is structurally wrong with the shoulder. It's not clear when he'll resume his rehab assignment.

The severity of the injury isn't yet known. Herrera has been out since late May with a right hamstring strain. He'll likely need an extended rehab assignment before being activated from the disabled list.

Jonathan Herrera (hamstring) will be placed on the 15-day disabled list before Wednesday's game.

Herrera left Tuesday's game after straining his right hamstring. DJ LeMahieu will be called up to replace him on the active roster. LeMahieu, who was acquired from the Cubs in the Ian Stewart deal, is hitting .315/.354/.398 with one home run, 26 RBI, 11 stolen bases and a .752 OPS in 43 games with Triple-A Colorado Springs this season.

It's not clear at this point if it's a day-to-day situation or perhaps something worse. Marco Scutaro replaced him at second base.
