Yankees signed RHP Jon Meloan to a minor league contract.

The Yankees signed him away from the the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League. The 27-year-old right-hander hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2009 as a member of the Athletics and will serve as organizational depth with Double-A Trenton.

An MRI exam on Friday revealed a ligament tear in his right elbow. He's planning to see Dr. James Andrews this week. Ligament replacement surgery would likely place him on the shelf for a year and perhaps longer.

Jon Meloan told the San Francisco Chronicle Saturday that he expects to undergo season-ending surgery on his right elbow next week.

An MRI exam done Friday on his sore elbow revealed a ligament tear. He's hoping to get checked out by joint specialist Dr. James Andrews in the next few days for a recommendation on what procedure to undergo. Tommy John surgery could keep him out until the middle of the 2011 season.

We'll see how his elbow responds after he throws again on Thursday. Meloan complained of soreness after tossing a bullpen session on Tuesday.

Meloan complained of soreness after throwing a bullpen session on Tuesday and the A's want to make sure there's nothing structurally wrong with his throwing elbow. The 25-year-old righty allowed only a single unearned run last season in 8 1/3 innings with the Athletics.

Meloan was claimed off waivers from the Pirates on September 2. He posted a 4.37 ERA between four different Triple-A stops (Oakland, Tampa Bay, Cleveland, Pittsburgh) this season. He hasn't appeared in the majors since last September 21 as a member of the Indians.

The Pirates are the third team to give up on Meloan this season. He was traded by the Indians to the Rays for Winston Abreu in early July and designated for assignment by the Rays a month later. Over three different Triple-A stops, Meloan produced a 4.57 ERA in 65 innings. The former top relief prospect will get a shot elsewhere. This move clears room on Pittsburgh's 40-man roster for Daniel McCutchen.
