Eugenio Velez has elected free agency.

Velez did not appear in a game at the major league level in 2012, but posted a solid .280/.358/.449 line with 11 homers, 58 RBI and 37 steals at Triple-A Memphis. The switch-hitting utility man could generate some interest on the free agent market.

Velez, 29, went 0-for-37 with the Dodgers this past season and batted .339/.371/.463 with two homers, 31 RBIs and 33 runs in 55 games with Triple-A Albuquerque. The switch-hitting utility man offers some speed and organizational depth.

Eugenio Velez - OF - Blue Jays

Dodgers purchased the contract of INF-OF Eugenio Velez from Triple-A Albuquerque.

He'll take the place of Dee Gordon on the active roster. Velez, 29, was batting .339/.371/.463 with two homers, 31 RBI and an .834 OPS over 235 plate appearances at the Triple-A level. His speed makes him worth watching in deeper NL-only leagues, though it's unlikely he'll get enough playing time to be fantasy relevant.

Eugenio Velez - OF - Blue Jays

Eugenio Velez suffered a Grade 2 sprain of his right ankle during Tuesday's game against the Cubs.

Velez had to be carted off the field. He appeared to roll the ankle on first base while trying to avoid colliding with Blake DeWitt on a bunt play. He had a slim chance to make the team in the first place, so this injury should seal his fate. We expect him to begin the season with Triple-A Albuquerque.

Eugenio Velez missed a flight Tuesday and was not in camp for the Dodgers' first team workout.

Not a good start for the 28-year-old Velez, who already had a very distant shot of making the Dodgers' Opening Day roster. He batted just .164/.246/.309 over 55 at-bats last season for the Giants and will almost certainly be ticketed for Triple-A when camp breaks.

Velez was non-tendered by the Giants in early December after batting just .164 in 55 big league at-bats. The Dodgers probably view him as organizational depth, useful only in the event of an injury.

Velez wasn't eligible for arbitration, so apparently Giants GM Brian Sabean didn't think he was worthy of a spot on the 40-man roster. Velez, 28, batted .164 in 55 at-bats with the big club this past season and wasn't likely to make the Opening Day roster in 2011, anyway.

Giants recalled INF-OF Eugenio Velez from Triple-A Fresno.

Velez has spent the past month with Triple-A Fresno, working his way back from a concussion suffered in July. He is batting .196 with two home runs and eight RBI in 46 at-bats with the Giants this season. We're not expecting much, but he is capable of playing second base and the outfield.

Velez has been cleared to begin playing in rehab games but is still a long way from rejoining the big league club. He hit .196/.275/.370 in 46 at-bats for the Giants earlier this season and will only be called up in September if he shows that he can handle the competition at Triple-A.

Eugenio Velez (concussion) has been cleared to resume baseball activities and is hoping to begin playing in rehab games this week.

Velez has been sidelined since he was struck in the head by a Pat Burrell foul ball in late July. The Giants are going to slow-play this, but it seems likely that Velez will be back in the majors by the end of August. He was batting .196/.275/.370 over 46 at-bats for the big league club.

Eugenio Velez, who suffered a concussion Saturday, will wait a week before resuming baseball-related activities.

Velez was struck in the head by a Pat Burrell foul ball while relaxing in the dugout and had to be rushed to a local hospital. The utilityman reported no pains or headaches when he showed up to the ballpark Monday, but the Giants are going to allow him to take it very slow with his recovery.

Velez was struck on the head by a foul ball while sitting in the dugout Saturday, sustaining a concussion and a contusion. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday and is out indefinitely.

Velez was struck on the head by a foul ball while sitting in the dugout Saturday. He had to be taken to the hospital, and it was determined that he suffered a concussion, but no fractures were present. He is out indefinitely.

	7	Drew Hutchison D.L. Drew Hutchison (elbow) is on track to face live hitters in about three weeks. Hutchison is currently making his way back from Tommy John surgery last August. While the 22-year-old right-hander is unlikely to see any game action until late in the season, he feels good about his progress. "You always want to do more but you know you have to follow the process and do what they tell you to do because that’s what’s in your best interest," said Hutchison. "I feel good, which is good, but you also realize that it’s the process and you need to follow the process." May 8
	8	Kyle Drabek D.L. Kyle Drabek (elbow) expects to throw live batting practice in the next week or two. Drabek threw a bullpen session Monday in extended spring training. He's coming back from the second Tommy John surgery of his career, so the Blue Jays figure to take things slow, but he could be looking at a return around midseason if all goes well. May 8
