Yankees sent RHP George Kontos outright to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Kontos went unclaimed after being designated for assignment by the Yankees on Wednesday. Acquired from the Indians for cash considerations at the beginning of August, he'll need to be put back on the 40-man roster to pitch again for New York, but there's a chance that could happen if there are injuries or other transactions. Date:

Yankees designated RHP George Kontos for assignment.

The move will clear a roster spot for Luis Cessa. Acquired from the Indians for cash considerations at the beginning of August, Kontos appeared in just one game for the Yankees; throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings against the Mets on Monday. Assuming he goes unclaimed, he'll likely report back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with a chance to rejoin the team at some point before the 2018 season finishes.
Aug 15 - 4:32 PM

Yankees purchased the contract of RHP George Kontos from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The Yankees have yet to announce a corresponding roster move. Lindsey Adler of The Athletic first reported news of Kontos' presence in New York's clubhouse. Kontos was recently acquired from the Indians and owns a 4.68 ERA and 13/7 K/BB ratio over 25 innings this season in the majors. He figures to operate in middle relief.
Aug 13 - 3:59 PM

Yankees acquired RHP George Kontos from the Indians for cash considerations.

Kontos will report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 33-year-old began his big league career with the Yankees in 2011, appearing in seven games. He owns a career 3.12 ERA and 1.16 WHIP across 355 1/3 innings at the major league level. He'll provide additional bullpen depth at Triple-A.
Aug 4 - 1:06 PM

Indians sent RHP George Kontos outright to Triple-A Columbus.

The 33-year-old hurler appeared in just six games with the Indians, posting a 3.38 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 4/2 K/BB ratio across 5 1/3 innings. It's actually mildly surprising that he didn't attract interest on waivers. Assuming he doesn't elect free agency, he'll continue to serve as bullpen depth for the Tribe at Triple-A.
Jul 8 - 9:26 PM

Indians designated RHP George Kontos for assignment.

Kontos was fine during his brief time with the Tribe, but they needed to clear a roster spot for Carlos Carrasco's (elbow) return and he was the low man on the totem pole. He'll have the opportunity to elect free agency if he clears waivers.
Jul 6 - 2:57 PM

Indians purchased the contract of RHP George Kontos from Triple-A Columbus.

Kontos was released by the Pirates late last month after posting a 5.03 ERA in 19 2/3 innings, but he latched on with the Indians from there and earned his way back to the majors with 7 2/3 scoreless innings in Triple-A. The 33-year-old will operate in middle relief.
Jun 19 - 2:59 PM

Indians signed RHP George Kontos to a minor league contract.

Kontos was recently cut loose by the Pirates after posting a 5.03 ERA over 19 2/3 innings. The soon-to-be 33-year-old had a career 3.00 ERA over 322 major league relief appearances coming into this season and should get a shot with the Tribe before long if he can get off to a nice start at Triple-A Columbus.
Jun 3 - 11:41 AM

The Pirates have placed right-hander George Kontos on release waivers.

Kontos was designated for assignment late last week after posting a 5.03 ERA over 19 2/3 innings. He'll soon hit the open market in search of a new home.
May 28 - 1:56 PM

Pirates designated RHP George Kontos for assignment.

Kontos began the season in a setup role but has posted a 5.03 ERA with just nine strikeouts over 19 2/3 innings. He'll probably clear waivers given that he's making nearly $3 million.
May 25 - 3:54 PM

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Tuesday that George Kontos has been removed from his eighth-inning setup role.

Kontos holds a 4.58 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 17 2/3 innings this season. He hasn't pitched since Friday. "We're basically going to use the bullpen to get outs to get to [Felipe] Vazquez without anybody being anointed an eighth-inning guy," Hurdle said. "I don't see us naming an eighth-inning pitcher right now. You look at where the lineup's going to be. You look at the part of the lineup we're going to face."
May 16 - 9:40 AM

George Kontos pitched a perfect ninth for a save Monday against the Twins.

It's his second career save. The first came in Game 162 last year, as he got one out to finish off the Nats in an 11-8 game. Kontos closed today because Felipe Rivero pitched in both ends of Sunday's doubleheader. He's not a very good bet for additional saves.
Apr 2 - 4:54 PM

Pirates and RHP George Kontos avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.725 million contract.

Kontos was arbitration-eligible for the second time. He posted a 3.39 ERA over 65 appearances for the Giants and Pirates last season.
Jan 12 - 3:20 PM

Pirates activated RHP George Kontos from the 10-day disabled list.

Kontos missed two weeks with a right groin strain. He will be available out of the Pirates' bullpen in Thursday night's series finale against the Cubs.

George Kontos (groin) threw a 20-pitch simulated game on Tuesday.

Kontos landed on the disabled list with a right groin strain on August 22. He has not felt any discomfort since tossing Tuesday's simulated game and should be able to return to the team before the end of the season. Any setback would put his availability for the remainder in jeopardy.
