Giants acquired RHP George Kontos from the Yankees for C Chris Stewart.

Stewart was out of options, so the Giants did pretty well here. Kontos only made five appearance this spring due to an oblique injury, but had an impressive 2.62 ERA and 91/26 K/BB ratio in 89 1/3 innings last season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He could be a useful bullpen piece at some point.

George Kontos (oblique) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday.

Kontos has been sidelined with an oblique strain since the early days of camp. If all goes well Saturday, he'll continue on with a regular routine and could face hitters within a few days. The 26-year-old right-hander is running out of time to impress this spring.

George Kontos (oblique) has resumed long tossing.

Kontos has been sidelined since early in Yankees' camp with an oblique strain. The 26-year-old right-hander has an outside shot at a bullpen gig after posting a 2.62 ERA and 91/26 K/BB ratio in 89 1/3 innings this season at the Triple-A level and tossing six innings as a September call-up.

George Kontos thinks he'll only have to miss a couple of days after tweaking his oblique muscle during a throwing session Tuesday.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi indicated that Kontos would have to miss a couple weeks, but the 26-year-old right-hander thinks he'll be back sooner. He's doubtful to make the Yankees' bullpen no matter what.

George Kontos felt discomfort in his oblique during a throwing session Tuesday in Yankees camp.

Kontos has been shut down for a couple of weeks. He was doubtful to land a spot in the Yankees' Opening Day bullpen before the injury and is even more doubtful now.

Yankees acquired RHP George Kontos from the Padres.

The Padres selected Kontos 22nd overall in December's Rule 5 Draft but didn't want to carry him on their roster all season. The 25-year-old posted a 3.60 ERA and 38/15 K/BB ratio across 51 minor league innings last year. He's a decent relief prospect.

Padres selected RHP George Kontos from the Yankees with the 22nd pick in the Rule 5 Draft.

Kontos, 25, posted a 3.60 ERA and 38/15 K/BB ratio over 51 innings between High-A Tampa, Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this past season. The former 2006 fifth-round pick was originally drafted as a starting pitcher, but the Yankees converted him to a reliever in 2010.

George Kontos fanned 11 in five scoreless innings in Wednesday's Hawaiian Winter League action.

Kontos, a 2006 fifth-round pick best known for being arrested in Tampa in April, has a 3.00 ERA and a 22/7 K/BB ratio in 15 innings this winter. He had a 4.02 ERA in 94 innings in the FSL this year, but that came with a 101/30 K/BB ratio. There's some upside here.

Yankees prospect George Kontos was arrested early Thursday morning on trespassing and obstruction charges after he refused to leave a Tampa restaurant.

Management at the establishment said Kontos attempted to re-enter the business after he was asked to leave. The 21-year-old right-hander is currently free on bail. Kontos, a 2006 fifth-round pick, went 7-3 with a 2.64 ERA, 64 H and 82/19 K/BB in 78 1/3 IP for SS Single-A Staten Island last season.

George Kontos pitched six scoreless innings and struck out 11 as short-season Single-A Staten Island beat Tri-City Friday for the New York-Penn League championship.

Kontos had a lousy final season at Northwestern, but the 2006 fifth-round pick went 7-3 with a 2.64 ERA, 64 H and 82/19 K/BB in 78 1/3 IP for Staten Island. With a low-90s fastball and a quality slider, he has the stuff to maybe make it as a reliever in the majors.
