Nationals sent OF Brett Carroll outright to Triple-A Syracuse.

Carroll cleared waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this month. He has accepted the minor league assignment and will serve as depth for the outfield.

He was cleared to make room for Rick Ankiel's return from the disabled list. Carroll, who made the Nats out of spring training, was 0-for-2 in five games with the club.

Brett Carroll - OF - Nationals

Nationals purchased the contract of OF Brett Carroll from Triple-A Syracuse.

Carroll snagged a roster spot, despite batting just .206 (13-for-63) this spring. He'll likely split at-bats with Roger Bernadina in center fielder initially, but could be the odd man out when Rick Ankiel (hamstring) is ready to come off the disabled list.

With Michael Morse set to go on the DL, the Nats could keep Carroll as a part-time outfielder. Unlike Rick Ankiel and Roger Bernadina, he's a right-handed hitter, so he could start in center field against lefties.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson singled out Brett Carroll and Rick Ankiel as two players he's been intrigued by this spring.

The Nationals are looking to build a more productive bench in 2012. "I'm impressed with Carroll, who has opened my eyes," Johnson said. "Ankiel has looked very good this spring with his adjustments.'' Both Carroll and Ankiel signed minor league contracts this offseason and are capable of playing all three outfield positions.

Carroll used an out in his Brewers contract to become a free agent on Wednesday. Now 28 years old, he's a career .203/.281/.322 hitter in 322 major-league plate appearances.

Carroll was up for just over a week and received only three at-bats. He's being designated in order to clear a spot on the 25-man and 40-man rosters for the newly acquired Jerry Hairston. Carroll is likely to clear waivers and remain in the organization.

Brewers purchased the contract of OF Brett Carroll from Triple-A Nashville.

He'll replace the injured Carlos Gomez on the active roster. Carroll, 28, was batting .281/.356/.469 with 15 homers, 51 RBI and nine stolen bases in 381 plate appearances at the Triple-A level this season. Those are some pretty gaudy numbers for someone who has a .205 batting average over 319 plate appearances in the major leagues. In short, don't expect much.

The Brewers are expected to call up Brett Carroll to replace Carlos Gomez (broken collarbone) on the active roster.

Gomez, who broke his left collarbone, is expected to be placed on the disabled list before Thursday's game. Carroll is batting .281/.356/.469 with 15 homers, 51 RBI and nine stolen bases over 93 games with Triple-A Nashville this season. The 28-year-old has an ugly .205 batting average over 319 plate appearances in the big leagues, so he's unlikely to be fantasy relevant.

Carroll went 0-for-15 with the Royals before being reassigned to minor league camp last week. The 28-year-old outfielder has a .205/.284/.325 batting line over 319 major league plate appearances, all with the Marlins. He'll likely function as organizational depth at the Triple-A level.

Brett Carroll - OF - Nationals

Royals manager Ned Yost has been impressed with non-roster invitee Brett Carroll thus far.

"This kid has been very impressive," Yost said. "Offense has always been his knock, a little bit, but he has tons of power. He plays all out. What’s interesting about him is he signed (in 2004) as an infielder, and he looks interesting at third base." The problem for Carroll is that Alex Gordon, Melky Cabrera and Jeff Francoeur are the projected starting outfielders and Mitch Maier and Gregor Blanco are out of options. That doesn't even include Lorenzo Cain, who should eventually take over in center. Expect Carroll to begin the season at Triple-A.

Royals signed OF Brett Carroll to a minor league contract.

Carroll elected free agency after the Marlins outrighted him off their 40-man roster in early October. The 28-year-old outfielder hit just .197 in 32 games with the Marlins this year and registered equally poor production down on the farm. He's likely to begin the 2011 season at Triple-A.

He was slated to see a specialist over the weekend and evidently didn't receive good news. Roger Bernadina and Tyler Moore will continue to be the primary fill-ins for Werth. May 20
