Rays acquired RHP Virgil Vasquez from the Pirates for a player to be named later.

The trade was finalized Thursday evening and Vasquez is expected in Rays camp this weekend. A 27-year-old right-hander, he allowed six earned runs and nine hits in 2 1/3 innings this spring.

Pirates sent RHP Virgil Vasquez, RHP Eric Hacker and catcher Steve Lerud outright to Triple-A Indianapolis.

All three are now off the Pirates' 40-man roster. Vasquez posted a 5.84 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 14 appearances (seven starts) this season.

Pirates recalled RHP Virgil Vasquez from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Vasquez went 2-5 with a 6.09 ERA in seven Pirates starts from June 26 to August 1, but could get another crack at the starting rotation in late September as the Bucs begin shutting down their youngsters. Stay far away.

Pirates optioned RHP Virgil Vasquez to Triple-A Indianapolis.

A day after he picked up his first victory in five weeks. Vasquez went 2-5 with a 6.09 ERA in seven starts for Pittsburgh. His rotation spot will almost certainly go to Kevin Hart.

Virgil Vasquez lasted just 1 1/3 innings and surrendered five runs Sunday in a loss to the Phillies.

Vazquez was perfectly mediocre in his first three starts, going 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA, but this takes his ERA up to 6.52. Hopefully, the Pirates have seen enough of him now and will give either Ian Snell or Tom Gorzelanny the rotation spot after the break. There's just no upside here.

Virgil Vasquez held the Royals to two runs over six innings in a 5-3 win on Friday night.

Replacing Ian Snell in the rotation, Vasquez came as advertised, pounding the zone by throwing 66 of 99 pitches for strikes. He allowed just four hits and two walks, with both runs scoring in the second inning. He struck out seven in the win, which is quite a surprise considering he averaged considerably less than a strikeout per inning in the minors. A good first start, but don't get too excited. He's back of the rotation fodder.

Pirates recalled RHP Virgil Vasquez from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Vasquez, Friday's starter, was 5-2 with a 4.18 ERA and a 53/10 K/BB ratio in 14 starts for Triple-A Indianapolis this year. He doesn't bring a whole lot to the table fantasy-wise and we'd probably avoid him, even in NL-only leagues.

Virgil Vasquez has been recalled and will start Friday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Charlie Morton, who was scheduled to pitch Friday, will now start Sunday in Ian Snell's vacated spot, according to the report. Vasquez is 5-2 with a 4.18 ERA in 14 starts for Triple-A Indianapolis this year.

Pirates optioned RHP Virgil Vasquez to Triple-A Indianapolis; reassigned RHP Denny Bautista, RHP Chris Bootcheck, RHP Jason Davis, OF Garrett Jones, OF Jeff Salazar, C Erik Kratz and INF/OF Andy Phillips to minor league camp.

The Pirates kept listing Vasquez as a rotation contender, though he never did anything to deserve being taken seriously. He had a 7.62 ERA and more walks than strikeouts this spring. Davis is the one pitcher here who looked like a real threat to make the team. His exit would seem to suggest that Craig Hansen, Sean Burnett, Evan Meek and Rule-5 pick Donnie Veal are all on the team. Jesse Chavez is also still on the roster, but he'll likely be sent down unless an injury strikes.

Virgil Vasquez gave up three runs in 5 2/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Blue Jays.

It's an improvement for Vasquez, who lowered his ERA to 7.62. He's still under consideration for a rotation spot, but the opening will almost surely go to Jeff Karstens. Vasquez has allowed 17 hits, walked six and struck out five in 13 innings this spring.

Pirates claimed RHP Virgil Vasquez off waivers from the Padres.

Vasquez has now been waived and claimed three times in three months and if he sticks with the Pirates it will likely include beginning the season at Triple-A.

Padres designated RHP Virgil Vasquez for assignment.

Vasquez lasted two weeks on the roster after being claimed off waivers from the Red Sox and was also let go by the Tigers in October.

Padres claimed RHP Virgil Vasquez off waivers from the Red Sox.

We thought the Padres might be picking up a Boston pitcher off waivers, but we figured it'd be Charlie Zink after they previously grabbed knuckleballer Charlie Haeger during the season. Instead, they're taking Vasquez, who was Tigers property until the Red Sox claimed him in October. The 26-year-old was 12-12 with a 4.81 ERA, 179 H and 115/37 K/BB in 159 IP for Triple-A Toledo last season. He's a fringe fifth starter/middle reliever.

Red Sox claimed RHP Virgil Vasquez off waivers from the Tigers.

Vasquez served three stints with the Tigers in 2007, going 0-1 with an 8.64 ERA in three starts and two relief appearances. He was supposed to be one of the team's first alternatives going into 2008, but he got off to an awful start in Triple-A and never really impressed at any point. He ended up 12-12 with a 4.81 ERA, 179 H and 115/37 K/BB in 159 IP. Vasquez has a nice slider and above average command, but his fastball is subpar and he's prone to the home run ball. He's probably nothing more than middle-relief fodder, and the Red Sox may not keep him on their 40-man roster all winter.
