Early indications were that the 32-year-old Kawasaki would return to Japan over the winter, but he's back with the Jays on a minor league deal and trying to put himself into the mix at second base. Ryan Goins and Maicer Izturis are ahead of him right now.

There was a report in November that Kawasaki was expected to accept a $2 million contract to return to Japan, but the deal never came together. A fan and clubhouse favorite, the 32-year-old hit .229/.326/.308 with one home run, 24 RBI and seven stolen bases over 289 plate appearances this past season. He'll compete for a backup infielder job in the spring.

It comes after the Blue Jays officially declined Kawasaki's $1 million option for 2014, though Griffin notes that they were aware of his intentions to return to his native country. Kawasaki has a career .218/.306/.276 batting line across 157 major league games.
