Gonzalez passed through waivers unclaimed after he was designated for assignment over the weekend following the acquisition of Reid Brignac. The 30-year-old will function as organizational depth for New York.

Gonzalez, 30, originally came up with the Yankees in 2007 before turning into a journeyman. He went unclaimed on waivers last month after hitting .217/.269/.391 with one homer in 23 at-bats for the Cubs. He'll function as organizational infield depth for the Yankees with Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Kevin Youkilis and Eduardo Nunez all sidelined.

He was cleared to make room for Mark Lowe's return from the disabled list. Gonzalez is batting .241 (13-for-54) with two doubles, one triple and a .556 OPS in 24 games this season. Michael Young will now serve as the Rangers' backup middle infielder.
