Jose Mijares has opted out of his minor league contract with the Red Sox and is now a free agent, reports FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.
The 29-year-old southpaw looked to be a nice buy-low add by Boston over the winter even coming off a disappointing 2013 campaign in which he appeared in 60 games for the Giants and collected a 4.22 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and 54/20 K/BB ratio over 49 innings. The left-handed specialist entered last season with a 3.00 ERA over 264 career appearances and will soon procure another minor league deal, this time with a team that isn't so stacked with bullpen options. Red Sox sign LHP Jose Mijares to a minor league contract.

The 29-year-old southpaw appeared in 60 games for the Giants in 2013, compiling a 4.22 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and 54/20 K/BB ratio over 49 innings. He'll receive an invitation to major league spring training where he'll compete for a role in the Red Sox bullpen.

Giants sent LHP Jose Mijares outright to Triple-A Fresno.

Mijares elected free agency and is now eligible to sign elsewhere. The Giants needed to open space on the 40-man roster to accommodate Javier Lopez, who re-signed for three more years on Tuesday. Mijares struggled mightily in 2013, posting a 4.22 ERA and 1.78 WHIP over 49 innings. The left-handed specialist, however, entered last season with a 3.00 ERA over 264 career appearances.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Friday that he will ease off his use of left-handed specialist Jose Mijares down the stretch as he's been somewhat overused this season.

Bochy said that Mike Kickham will get looks in situations that he would normally utilize Mijares. The 28-year-old Mijares has appeared in 58 games for the Giants, posting a 4.13 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and 52/20 K/BB ratio over 48 innings.

Mijares missed a week following the death of his grandmother back in Venezuela. He will be available on Tuesday.

Giants placed LHP Jose Mijares on the restricted list.

Mijares will be activated on Tuesday, but since he's spent the allotted seven days on the bereavement list, the Giants had to move him to the restricted list for a day. The reliever has been in Venezuela following the passing of his grandmother.

Giants placed LHP Jose Mijares on the bereavement list.

Mijares has flown back to his native Venezuela following the passing of his grandmother. He can be on the bereavement list for 3-7 days. Sandy Rosario has been recalled in a corresponding move.

Jose Mijares (elbow) will face live hitters on a back field on Wednesday as he progresses in his recovery from a left posterior elbow impingement.

Mijares has been able to throw bullpen sessions already, and this should be the final hurdle before he is cleared to return to game action. Assuming there are no further setbacks, he should be counted on as a part of the Giants' Opening Day bullpen.

Jose Mijares (elbow) felt fine throwing off flat ground Monday.

It's not clear when he'll be ready for mound work, but Mijares is progressing in the right direction. He's recovering from a left posterior elbow impingement, leaving his status for Opening Day up in the air.

An MRI on Jose Mijares' left elbow showed no structural damage.

He's been diagnosed with a left posterior elbow impingement. Mijares will receive treatment for a couple of days before being examined again, at which point we'll have a better idea when he might resume throwing.

Jose Mijares was diagnosed with a left posterior elbow impingement.

It's not known how long he'll be sidelined, but it doesn't sound like great news. The 28-year-old left-hander posted a 2.56 ERA and 37/13 K/BB over 56 1/3 innings last season.

Jose Mijares felt some elbow soreness after throwing an inning in Wednesday's Cactus League game.

The Giants plan to give him a few days off and then reevaluate the situation, but it will be enough to knock him out of the World Baseball Classic. Mijares posted an exceptional 2.56 ERA in 56 1/3 innings last season between Kansas City and San Francisco. But it was his biggest workload since 2009.

Giants and LHP Jose Mijares avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.8 million contract.

It's a nice score for Mijares, who was arbitration-eligible for the second time. He posted a 2.56 ERA in 56 1/3 innings last season between the Royals and Giants.

Giants claimed LHP Jose Mijares off waivers from the Royals.

Mijares must be seriously disliked by his teammates or coaches. How else to explain two organizations giving up the cheap left-hander for nothing within the last nine months? Signed by Kansas City to a one-year, $925,000 contract after Minnesota non-tendered him in December, Mijares posted a stellar 2.56 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 51 appearances for the Royals. The 27-year-old southpaw has a career 3.04 ERA (139 ERA+) over 237 relief outings for the Twins and Royals. Perhaps he'll get more love on the West Coast.

Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports that the Angels are looking for a left-handed reliever and have expressed interest in Jose Mijares of the Royals and Marc Rzepczynski of the Cardinals, among others.

Mijares has a solid 1.72 ERA and 35/10 K/BB ratio over 36 2/3 innings this season. Rzepczynski has compiled a disappointing 5.06 ERA and 22/11 K/BB ratio in 32 innings this year, but has enjoyed success against left-handed batters. The Cardinals are still in the playoff race, so Mijares may be the more realistic target.
