Filling in for an injured Denard Span, Gorkys Hernandez went 2-for-5 with a double, four RBI and a walk Tuesday as the Giants beat the Diamondbacks 8-4.
Hernandez was penciled on to the Giants' roster right from the start of the spring, but he didn't figure to see much action after Chris Marrero was able to claim a spot platooning with Jarret Parker in left. It also didn't help matters that Hernandez hit just .211/.237/.368 with one steal in three tries during March. What the Giants weren't counting on was needing to replace Span on the second day of the season. Hernandez got the nod and collected as many RBI tonight as he had in 26 games and 54 at-bats for the Giants last year. He'll continue to start in center until Span returns. Apr 5 - 1:38 AM

Gorkys Hernandez is starting in center field and batting leadoff for the Giants in Friday's NLDS Game 1 against the Cubs.

Jon Lester has dominated left-handed batters this season, so Hernandez is getting the call in center over Denard Span. The Giants also have Kelby Tomlinson at second base over Joe Panik. Their full lineup looks like this: Hernandez CF, Brandon Belt 1B, Buster Posey C, Hunter Pence RF, Angel Pagan LF, Brandon Crawford SS, Tomlinson 2B, Conor Gillaspie 3B, Johnny Cueto P.

Gorkys Hernandez went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's loss to the Padres.

Hernandez cracked a solo home run in the seventh inning to boost the Giants to a 4-1 advantage. That would stand as the final score. The 29-year-old outfielder has seen just 28 at-bats with the big league club this season and has picked up 10 hits in that space, including two homers and three doubles. Despite some nice numbers in a small sample size, he does not hold fantasy value.

Gorkys Hernandez hit his first major league homer since 2012 in Wednesday's loss to the Rockies.

He also doubled. Hernandez has had just 29 major league at-bats since 2012, when he was a 24-year-old rookie. He'll mostly be a bench player this month, but he was getting a start in Denard Span's place tonight.

Giants purchased the contract of OF Gorkys Hernandez from Triple-A Sacramento.

He'll serve as outfield depth for San Francisco while Gregor Blanco recovers from a right shoulder impingement. Hernandez, 28, was batting .302/.382/.421 with eight home runs and 20 stolen bases in 116 games this season at Triple-A, but he seems doubtful to hold significant fantasy value.

Giants signed OF Gorkys Hernandez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Hernandez, 28, hit .288/.365/.406 at Triple-A with the Pirates last season and received a cup of coffee in the majors. He'll provide outfield depth.

Gorkys Hernandez has elected free agency.

Hernandez, now 28, appeared in eight games with the Pirates this season and spent most of the year in Triple-A, where he batted .288/.365/.406 with six homers and 42 RBI over 104 games. He'll look for a better opportunity elsewhere.

Pirates activated OF Gorkys Hernandez from the 15-day disabled list; sent him outright to Triple-A Indianapolis.

He's now off the 40-man roster. Hernandez might remain in the minors for the rest of the season.

Gorkys Hernandez (shoulder) has been sent to Triple-A Indianapolis to begin a rehab assignment.

Hernandez was placed on the disabled list last weekend with a sore left shoulder. He should be ready when his two weeks are up but isn't a given to be added to the big league roster, especially with the Pirates in pursuit of offensive help.

Pirates placed OF Gorkys Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 13, with left shoulder discomfort.

It looks like a phantom injury that allows the Pirates to bring back Wilfredo Boscan early for bullpen depth. Hernandez should be ready to return later this month when eligible.

Pirates purchased the contract of OF Gorkys Hernandez from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Hernandez was batting .275/.359/.415 with five homers and eight steals at Indy. He'll back up at all three outfield spots.

Gorkys Hernandez went 3-for-4 with a home run Monday to lead the Pirates to a 7-6 win over the Rays.

Hernandez has a great glove, but his bat has kept him out of the majors since a 70-game stint with the Marlins and Pirates in 2012. That might change next month, since the Pirates are looking for a reserve outfielder with Travis Snider gone. They're smart enough to know his .407 spring average won't carry over, but he's in the running anyway. What might work against him is that the Pirates hardly need to focus on defense with their outfield reserves when they have three legitimate center fielders in the starting lineup.

Gorkys Hernandez is expected to arrive to Pirates' camp on Saturday.

The non-roster invitee has been delayed a couple of days by visa issues. The 27-year-old will be competing for a reserve outfielder role with the Pirates this spring but offers little in the way of fantasy relevance.

Gorkys Hernandez is absent from Pirates' camp due to a visa issue.

Hernandez reunited with the Pirates over the winter on a minor league deal and is a non-roster invitee this spring. Assuming he gets his visa situation cleared up soon, he'll try to make his case for a reserve outfielder job.
Tue, Feb 24, 2015 09:15:00 AM

Pirates signed OF Gorkys Hernandez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Hernandez hasn't been in the major leagues since 2012, when he batted just .192/.267/.301 in 173 plate appearances between the Marlins and Pirates. The 27-year-old outfielder does have pretty good speed.
