The deal includes a spring training invite. Mitchell, 28, was non-tendered by the A's earlier this month after batting .252/.345/.386 with six homers, 15 stolen bases and a .731 OPS this past season in Triple-A. He's a long shot to make the Opening Day roster.

Athletics non-tendered OF Jermaine Mitchell.

Mitchell was already designated for assignment, so he's officially a free agent. The 28-year-old outfielder batted .252/.345/.386 with six homers, 15 stolen bases and a .731 OPS last season with Oakland's Triple-A affiliate.

He was cleared to make room for the newly-acquired Sandy Rosario on the 40-man roster. Mitchell, 28, batted .252/.345/.386 with six homers, 38 RBI, 15 stolen bases and a .731 OPS in 108 games this past season with Triple-A Sacramento. He's likely to pass through waivers unclaimed.

Athletics optioned OF Jermaine Mitchell to Triple-A Sacramento.

Mitchell was surprisingly a full participant in Athletics camp despite offseason knee surgery, but is no longer considered a prospect entering his age-27 season. He's closer to organizational depth than he is a potential option for the A's moving forward.

Jermaine Mitchell is a full participant in Athletics camp despite offseason microfracture surgery on his knee.

Mitchell was added to the 40-man roster after batting .332/.430/.530 with 15 homers, 78 RBI, 27 stolen bases between Double- and Triple-A in 2011. At 27, he's too old to be called a prospect, but it's possible he could break camp with the big club if he has a good spring training.

Athletics purchased the contract of OF Jermaine Mitchell from Triple-A Sacramento.

The 27-year-old Mitchell enjoyed a breakthrough 2011 season, batting .332/.430/.530 with 15 homers, 78 RBI, 27 stolen bases and a .960 OPS over 635 plate appearances between Double-A Midland and Triple-A Sacramento. While he is a potential option for the A's outfield moving forward, he is at risk of missing the start of the season following knee surgery.
