Gustavo Molina is expected to open the season as the Yankees' backup catcher.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi has indicated recently that Gustavo Molina might be carried as the team's backup catcher behind starter Russell Martin.

Austin Romine has not enjoyed a great spring training, Montero needs every day at-bats, and the Yankees want to bring north a catcher who can handle emergency starts behind the injury-prone Martin. Molina, 29, has 317 career major league plate appearances to his name. He spent most of the 2010 season in Boston's farm system.
