Brewers placed 1B Mat Gamel on the 60-day disabled list with a knee injury.
It's a procedural move, as Gamel required surgery in early March to repair a torn right ACL and is expected to miss the entire 2013 season. The Brewers now have an opening on their 40-man roster. Mar 20 - 2:17 PM

Mat Gamel is scheduled to undergo surgery on Friday in Scottsdale, Arizona to repair a new tear in his right ACL.

Gamel has already been ruled out for all of 2013 and will probably be placed on the 60-day disabled list shortly. He also missed most of 2012. The 27-year-old will be arbitration-eligible next winter but has only appeared in 106 major league games over the past five seasons.

Mat Gamel (knee) has been ruled out for the season.

Gamel re-injured his surgically-repaired right knee on Saturday in camp. It's another tough development for the Brewers, who were going to rely on Gamel as their starter at first base this season until Corey Hart recovered from his own recent knee procedure. The Milwaukee front office will have to reconsider outside options to fill the hole at a premium offensive position.

Mat Gamel (knee) was held out of drills Sunday but could return to action Monday on a limited basis.

"It won’t be full go, we’ll just get him out there and acclimate him to the different things going on," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. Gamel experienced a setback with his surgically-repaired right knee Saturday, and while Milwaukee's skipper said he doesn't view it as a red flag yet, the club will obviously keep a close eye on him.

Mat Gamel had to cut Saturday's workout short after aggravating his surgically-repaired right knee.

The Brewers are being extremely cautious with Gamel's recovery this early in camp, but it's clear that something is wrong. Look for the team to release an update on his status shortly. If healthy, Gamel will serve as the Brewers' primary first baseman this season while Corey Hart (knee) spends a month or so on the disabled list.

Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash said Mat Gamel is "ready to go" after having his surgically-repaired right knee examined Sunday.

Gamel had ACL surgery in May but hasn't encountered any hiccups during his rehab. The 27-year-old is expected to serve as the club's regular first baseman for the first couple months of the season while Corey Hart recovers from a knee surgery of his own. After that, Gamel will slide into a roving backup role at first and third base, as well as the corner outfield spots.
Jan 27 - 1:46 PM

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Tuesday that Mat Gamel (knee) will get extensive work in the outfield during spring training.

Gamel was the Brewers' starter at first base prior to tearing his ACL in May, but the Brewers plan to use him in a utility role now that Corey Hart has found a home there. "We're trying to get him more versatile," said Roenicke. "He'll play some outfield (in camp). Probably more in right field but some in left field today because 'Braunie' doesn't play every game. And he wants to do it." Gamel will also likely get work at third base as a backup to Aramis Ramirez.

The Brewers hope Mat Gamel (knee) will be ready to play winter ball this offseason.

The Brews were hoping he'd be ready to play in the Arizona Fall League, but his rehab simply isn't far enough along. Gamel played for Estrellas in the Dominican Winter League last year, but their roster is full, so he'll have to find another team. Barring a setback, Gamel is expected to be healthy for the start of spring training.

Mat Gamel (knee) won't play in the Arizona Fall League.

Gamel simply hasn't made enough progress from his ACL surgery. The 27-year-old first baseman played in only 21 games this season but should be back near full health by the beginning of spring training next February.

The Brewers are considering sending Mat Gamel (ACL surgery) to the Arizona Fall League.

Gamel's major league service time is more than rules allow, so the Brewers would have to be granted an exception. Assistant general manager Gord Ash said Gamel is "right on schedule" in his rehabilitation and will resume baseball activities in September.

Mat Gamel underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn ACL in his right knee.

Gamel also had surgery to repair a debridement of the lateral meniscus. He will miss the rest of the season. Travis Ishikawa, Taylor Green, Corey Hart and Brooks Conrad have all seen time at first base since his injury and the Brewers could eventually go outside the organization for a more stable solution.

Mat Gamel will undergo surgery Tuesday morning to repair a torn ACL in his right knee.

Gamel suffered a torn ACL on May 1 after slamming into the right-field retaining wall while trying to track down a foul pop-up. The surgery will keep him out of action for the rest of the season.

Brewers transferred 1B Mat Gamel from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Gamel has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2012 season because of a torn ACL in his right knee.

Brewers placed 1B Mat Gamel on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 2, with a torn right ACL.

Gamel blew out his knee after slamming into the right-field retaining wall while trying to track down a foul pop-up in San Diego. Though the Brewers have yet to officially rule him out for the season, it's almost certainly a season-ending injury. Travis Ishikawa is expected to receive the bulk of the time at first base.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said that Mat Gamel has a torn ACL in his right knee that will likely require season-ending surgery.

It's too bad, as Gamel was finally getting a chance to be an everyday player following Prince Fielder's departure. Though he was batting just .246/.293/.348 with one homer over his first 75 plate appearances, it's a notable blow to the Brewers, who have little depth at first base. They'll likely use Travis Ishikawa there for now, but we suspect that they'll look for help outside the organization.
