Reds released INF Joel Guzman.
Guzman latched on with the Reds in January after spending last season in Japan, but he was hitting just .263 with seven homers and a .722 OPS over 65 games with Double-A Pensacola. The 27-year-old former top prospect hasn't played in the big leagues since 2007 as a member of the Rays. Wed, Jun 27, 2012 02:49:00 PM

Reds signed INF Joel Guzman to a minor league contract.

It's not clear if the deal includes a spring training invite. Guzman, a former top prospect with the Dodgers, batted .181/.219/.298 with seven homers and an ugly 81/9 K/BB ratio over 251 plate appearances with the Chunichi Dragons in Japan's Central League last year. Now 27 years old, he's nothing more than organizational filler.

In his first game since being demoted, Joel Guzman went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI for Double-A Harrisburg on Sunday.

Joel Guzman went 2-for-5 and homered Saturday as the Nationals' first baseman in s 7-5 win over the Mets.

It's inevitable that Guzman will eventually be reassigned to minor league camp, but he can maybe force the Nats to put the move for a while if he keeps hitting. He's 3-for-10 so far. The former top prospect will likely be a third baseman and outfielder for Triple-A Columbus last season.

Making his season debut in the DWL, Joel Guzman went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI on Wednesday.

Guzman still has promise left at age 23, but no one opted to claim him off waivers when the Rays made him available in September. A big winter might lead to more interest in his services, though it's highly unlikely that he'll get to open next year in the majors.

Rays designated infielder Joel Guzman for assignment.

Unless granted an extra year, Guzman will be out of options next year, and he's obviously not nearly ready after hitting .248/.276/.438 with a 103/19 K/BB ratio for Triple-A Durham. He's still just 23 and the power potential hasn't gone anywhere. However, it doesn't look like things are going to click for him anytime soon.

Triple-A Durham's Joel Guzman homered in a third straight game on Sunday.

Guzman has six homers in his last eight games, so he's finally flashing his enormous power potential for the first time in a couple of years. Unfortunately, he's still at a disappointing .256/.290/.477 for the year.

Joel Guzman finished 3-for-4 with two homers for Triple-A Durham on Friday.

A rare sign of life from Guzman. Because of Willy Aybar's issues, the Rays gave serious thought to carrying Guzman over Eric Hinske until the final weekend of the spring. Fortunately, they decided against it. Guzman still has loads of potential, but he's no major leaguer right now. He's hitting .243/.287/.417 in 144 at-bats for Durham.

Joel Guzman homered and doubled Friday in his season debut in the Dominican Winter League.

Guzman hit .243/.282/.378 in 37 at-bats while spending the final six weeks of the season with the Rays. He doesn't appear to be in the Rays' plans for the start of 2008, which is probably for the best. Still, since he's only turning 23 later this month, they're not giving up on him.
