Blake Wood's rehab assignment has been halted after he felt soreness in his surgically-repaired right elbow in his first appearance with Double-A Akron on Saturday.

Wood will resume the assignment once the soreness subsides. It's obviously not ideal, but pitchers often encounter little bumps in the road as they work their way back from Tommy John surgery.

Wood underwent Tommy John surgery on May 25. He's a bit ahead of schedule, as normally pitchers go six month after the procedure without throwing. It's possible he could be ready for the start of next season, but most likely he'll begin the year on the DL.

The Royals announced that Blake Wood (elbow) will be shut down for 10-14 days.

Wood was forced from Saturday's game due to tightness in his pitching elbow. It's an issue he's dealt with for a while now and it's gotten worse. The good news is that it doesn't appear Wood has anything structurally wrong with his elbow. The bad is that it could still threaten his availability for Opening Day. Stay tuned.

Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports that Blake Wood was forced from Saturday's game due to "progressive tightness" in his pitching elbow.

Wood will be examined Sunday, as evidently it's an issue he's had for a while now and it's gotten worse. Slated to be a middle reliever for Kansas City this season, we'll update his status when more is known.
