Mar 22 - 11:42 AM

The Royals announced that Blake Wood (elbow) will be shut down for 10-14 days.

Wood was forced from Saturday's game due to tightness in his pitching elbow. It's an issue he's dealt with for a while now and it's gotten worse. The good news is that it doesn't appear Wood has anything structurally wrong with his elbow. The bad is that it could still threaten his availability for Opening Day. Stay tuned.

Blake Wood has been unavailable to pitch lately due to a bad back.

Wood said he has dealt with back pain on and off since having herniated disc surgery in 2007, and on August 14 he woke up in pain. "We’ve been monitoring him a little bit," Royals manager Ned Yost said Sunday. "Nothing serious. We might give Woody one more day depending on how he feels." Wood felt good after throwing off a mound Sunday, so he should be available to pitch Monday.

Royals recalled RHP Blake Wood from Triple-A Omaha.

Wood spent all of 2009 at Double-A Arkansas and posted rather unimpressive numbers, but the Royals got him started at Triple-A this season anyway. He rewarded the faith with 16 2/3 innings of solid relief pitching for Omaha and should bring a little consistency to the big league bullpen.

Royals optioned RHP Blake Wood to Triple-A Omaha.

Wood allowed four runs in 7 2/3 innings of work this spring. The 24-year-old former third round pick posted a 5.83 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 17 games (13 starts) for Double-A Northwest Arkansas last season. He's slated to give Triple-A a try for the first time in his professional career.

In just his second start since moving up, Blake Wood hurled a shutout and struck out 10 for Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Wednesday.

Wood has made 12 starts between Single-A Wilmington and Northwest Arkansas and gone 4-2 with a 2.55 ERA, 42 H and 79/17 K/BB in 70 2/3 innings. His curveball probably won't be quite the go-to pitch in the majors that it's been in the minors, but with the way his changeup has improved, he should be able to make it as a starter.
