Cubs purchased the contract of INF Chris Valaika from Triple-A Iowa.

He'll take the place of Felix Doubront on the active roster, who was placed on the disabled list on Friday. The utility infielder was hitting .278/.344/.423 with 10 homers and 50 RBI over 102 games at Iowa. He'll function in a reserve role for the Cubs.

The deal includes an invitation to spring training. The 28-year-old spent the 2013 season with the Marlins, hitting .219/.261/.344 with 16 strikeouts in 64 at-bats. He has the ability to handle all four infield positions defensively and should compete for a reserve role with the Marlins during spring training.

The move was made in order to add recent acquisitions Josh Wall and Stephen Ames to the 40-man roster. Valaika has already missed 60 days while recovering from a left wrist fracture. There's no timetable for his return.

Valaika, playing second base, was injured when Yonder Alonso slid into him on a steal attempt. The plan was for him to play fairly regularly with Donovan Solano on the DL, but now that might be Nick Green's job.

Chris Valaika is expected to miss 3-4 weeks following surgery on his right knee.

It's the very same knee which required surgery last September. The 26-year-old was hitting .244/.274/.384 with three homers, 16 RBI and a .658 OPS over his first 175 plate appearances at the Triple-A level this year.
