Reds acquired INF Beau Mills from the Indians in exchange for cash considerations.
The 13th overall selection in the 2007 draft, Mills' pro career to this point has been a huge disappointment, and the Tribe has decided to give up on him. The 25-year-old will bring a career .267/.330/.444 batting line to Double-A Pensacola. Fri, Jun 22, 2012 08:12:00 AM

Three Indians prospects -- infielder Beau Mills, outfielder Jerad Head and right-hander Josh Tomlin -- were charged with felonious assault after a fight at an Ohio nightclub earlier this month.

The alleged attack left 25-year-old Theodore Zeman III with a punctured lung and rib fractures. Mills, 23, and Head, 27, pleaded not guilty in Akron Municipal Court on Thursday. Mills is the son of Astros' manager Brad Mills. The 2007 first-round pick was ranked as the organization's No. 24 prospect by Baseball America over the winter.

Single-A Kinston's Beau Mills went 3-for-4 with two homers and a walk Friday.

The 2007 first-round pick is hitting .270/.361/.478 through 289 at-bats. It's not a bad line, but more was expected from a player who looked like the second most advanced hitter in last year's draft behind Matt LaPorta. It turned out that Matt Wieters was well ahead of him, and both Sean Doolittle and Todd Frazier have also put up superior numbers to date.

The Indians believe Beau Mills could stick at third base bcause he's regained strength in his surgically repaired right shoulder.

Mills looked like a first baseman or DH when he was drafted 13th overall in 2007. "We are committing to him as a third baseman now," scouting director John Mirabelli said. "The only reason we moved him to first base was because of his shoulder. But with his shoulder no longer an issue, we like him more as a third baseman. He's playing third base in the instructional league, and he's going to go into next season with the game plan is he's going to play third base." We're skeptical that Mills will reach the majors as a third baseman, but his bat should eventually get him into Cleveland's lineup regardless.

College third baseman Beau Mills was selected 13th overall by the Indians in the 2007 draft.

Mills, the son of Boston's bench coach, had 38 homers at an NAIA school, Lewis-Clark State, this season. He's probably not going to remain at third base. Left field is a possibility, but he's more likely to settle in as a first baseman or a DH. He possesses legitimate 30-homer power, and he should have the on-base skills to be a major league regular.
