After Chris Valaika got hurt, Chris Coghlan made his first appearance at second base since 2010 on Tuesday.
This would be more notable if Coghlan weren't hitting .185 with one RBI in 54 at-bats for the season. He's lucky he still has a roster spot at this point. May 8 - 1:19 AM

Chris Coghlan hit a walkoff RBI single in the Marlins' defeat of the Phillies on Saturday in Miami.

Coghlan smacked a hard grounder past Phillies second baseman Chase Utley to drive in the winning run. He will get the bulk of playing time in center field while Justin Ruggiano is sidelined but holds little fantasy value. Coghlan is a .270/.339/.394 career hitter in the majors.
Apr 13 - 10:08 PM

The Marlins will use Chris Coghlan and Justin Ruggiano in a platoon in center field at the start of the season.

That's bad news for Ruggiano's fantasy owners, as he'll be on the short side of the platoon. Coghlan has done very little for the Marlins since winning NL Rookie of the Year honors back in 2009, but the Marlins will give him a shot after he batted .306/.338/.468 with a homer and seven RBI this spring. He's hitting second in the Marlins' Opening Day lineup.
Mar 31 - 11:12 AM

Chris Coghlan has made the Marlins' 25-man roster.

The 2009 National League Rookie of the Year has batted just .207/.274/.320 in 403 plate appearances since the start of the 2011 season. He'll be a backup outfielder.
Mar 28 - 1:22 PM

Chris Coghlan went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the Marlins' 6-5 defeat of the Cardinals on Saturday.

Coghlan has his average back up to .314 as he attempts to win a spot on the Marlins' bench. There should be two openings to divvy up between Coghlan, Austin Kearns and Gorkys Hernandez, at least until Logan Morrison comes off the DL. That Hernandez is out of options makes him the favorite for one, and Coghlan is having a vastly better spring than Kearns, which could give him the edge for the other.
Mar 23 - 5:01 PM

Chris Coghlan is 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI against the Braves on Sunday.

Coghlan is a big long shot to overtake Justin Ruggiano for a spot in the Opening Day lineup, but he could be kept as a bench player after spending most of last year in Triple-A. The 2009 NL Rookie of the Year is hitting .344 in 32 at-bats this spring.

Marlins recalled OF Chris Coghlan from Triple-A New Orleans.

Coghlan batted just .140/.212/.183 during his time with the Marlins this year, as he's failed to recapture the magic from his Rookie of the Year campaign. He'll likely be back at New Orleans next season.

Marlins optioned OF Chris Coghlan to Triple-A New Orleans.

He certainly can't complain, having batted a measly .140/.212/.183 over 93 at-bats. A corresponding move has not been announced.

Chris Coghlan went 2-for-4 with his eighth RBI in Sunday's loss to the Giants.

Today was Coghlan's first multi-hit game in seven starts since being recalled on May 19, though he's driven in six runs since being summoned back to the bigs. Still hitting just .138/.194/.207 on the year, however, Coghlan has got to be better in what could be his final major-league chance with the Marlins. With Emilio Bonifacio out 4-6 weeks following thumb surgery, Coghlan will get an extended opportunity to prove himself.

Chris Coghlan went 0-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in Thursday's 14-7 loss to the Giants.

Coghlan has one hit in 13 at-bats since his call-up last Saturday. In two major league stints this season, he is hitting a combined .106/.160/.128.

Marlins recalled OF Chris Coghlan from Triple-A New Orleans.

He takes Gaby Sanchez's spot on the 25-man roster. Coghlan was banished to the minors in late-April after hitting an anemic .121/.147/.152 through 35 plate appearances. He's batted .275 at Triple-A. The 26-year-old center fielder entered 2012 having batted just .252/.318/.376 in the two seasons since he won the 2009 NL Rookie of the Year award. He'll have a better shot at playing time if the Fish shift Logan Morrison to first base.

Marlins optioned OF Chris Coghlan to Triple-A New Orleans.

It's the right call. Coghlan was hitting an anemic .121/.147/.152 through 35 plate appearances. He'll be given more playing time and a chance to work on his plate approach in the minors. The 26-year-old center fielder entered 2012 having batted just .252/.318/.376 in the two seasons since he won the 2009 NL Rookie of the Year award.

Chris Coghlan reached base all three times he was up Saturday, going 1-for-1 with two walks.

Scott Cousins and Aaron Rowand looked like the favorites to serve as the Marlins' reserve outfielders at the start of camp, but it's going to be Coghlan and Austin Kearns making the cut instead. Coghlan, who missed time early on with back problems, is hitting .267 in 45 at-bats, though he's still without an extra-base hit. He probably won't have much fantasy value.

Chris Coghlan, who has missed time with back problems this spring, had two hits and two runs scored as the Marlins defeated the Mets 3-1 on Thursday.

Neither Scott Cousins nor Bryan Petersen has done much of anything this spring, so Coghlan might yet be a candidate to make the Marlins. It could well come down to playing time; if the Marlins don't think they can get enough at-bats, it'd make more sense to let him start regularly in Triple-A initially. Coghlan also needs to prove he's healthy, of course. He's 3-for-9 in five games to date.

Chris Coghlan (back) made the trip with the Marlins to Port St. Lucie Sunday.

Coghlan was scratched from Friday's lineup due to lower back tightness, but the fact that the Marlins let him travel with a back injury suggests the ailment isn't a big deal. He should be fine.
