Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Tuesday that he "will consider" Cory Rasmus for a playoff start.

The proposition obviously wasn't near the radar just a few weeks ago, but Rasmus has surprised with a 1.69 ERA and 16/4 K/BB ratio over 16 innings across five starts after being pressed into rotation duty. He hasn't gone more than four innings or thrown more than 59 pitches in any outing, so any playoff start would be abbreviated. However, Rasmus being picked probably isn't a long shot given the state of the Angels' rotation beyond Jered Weaver.

Cory Rasmus fired four shutout innings against the Mariners on Tuesday.

Rasmus only allowed one hit and no walks in the mini-gem, striking out four. Instead of doing the predictable thing and trading for a mediocre starter to fill Garrett Richards' old rotation spot, Angels manager Mike Scioscia decided to make the turn a bullpen day, always to be kicked off by Rasmus. This was Rasmus' fourth consecutive start, and he hasn't thrown more than 49 pitches in any of them (43 tonight). Rasmus (2.57 ERA) has a nice matchup on deck with the Rangers coming to town, but don't expect him to pitch long enough to have a shot at a win.
Sep 17 - 1:29 AM

Cory Rasmus made another spot start for the Angels and took a no-decision, allowing one run over 3 1/3 innings against the Rangers on Thursday.

Rasmus has been used exclusively as a reliever since A-ball, so he doesn't have the endurance of a typical spot starter. As such, he's lasted a total of eight innings in three starts for the Angels since August 30. Against the Rangers, he yielded only two hits while striking out three and issuing zero walks. He'll bring a 2.80 ERA and a 47/15 K/BB ratio into Tuesday's home start against the Mariners.
Sep 11 - 11:43 PM

Cory Rasmus will make another start for the Angels on Thursday night against the Rangers.

Rasmus was excellent in his first spot start last Saturday, striking out six batters over three scoreless innings against the A's. But he struggled in a similar role this weekend against the Twins and will be a poor fantasy bet versus the Rangers. The Angels are essentially using Rasmus as their fifth starter.
Sep 8 - 10:58 AM

Cory Rasmus will start Saturday against the Twins.

Rasmus struck out six batters over three scoreless innings in a spot start last Saturday against the A's. He should be able to go a little bit deeper into the game this time, but we wouldn't recommend using him in fantasy leagues.
Sep 4 - 5:36 PM

Angels recalled RHP Cory Rasmus from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Rasmus struck out six batters over three scoreless innings in a spot start last Saturday against the A's. He could lead some bullpen games for the Angels down the stretch but probably won't be a reliable fantasy streamer.
Sep 2 - 5:06 PM

Angels optioned RHP Cory Rasmus to Triple-A Salt Lake.

It's a procedural move, as Rasmus will return soon. The righty gave the Angels a lift in a spot start Saturday, striking out six over three scoreless innings.
Aug 31 - 1:16 PM

Cory Rasmus struck out six batters over three scoreless innings Saturday in a spot start against the A's.

And the Angels went on to win 2-0, with eight different pitchers combining on the shutout. Rasmus gave up only one hit and did not issue a walk over the first three frames, and the A's managed just two hits against the Anaheim bullpen. The Angels are now four games up on Oakland in the American League West standings.
Aug 31 - 12:00 AM

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Cory Rasmus is an option to start on Saturday.

Rasmus has a 2.68 ERA as the Angels' long reliever, but Rasmus hasn't started a game, majors or minors, since 2011. An outside acquisition is also an option to fill the rotation spot vacated by Garrett Richards.
Aug 27 - 6:52 PM

Angels recalled RHP Cory Rasmus from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Rasmus has posted a 3.00 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 15 innings with the Angels this season. He figures to be utilized in middle relief.
Jul 10 - 4:44 PM

Angels optioned RHP Cory Rasmus to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Rasmus has a decent 3.00 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP with 12 strikeouts in 15 innings pitched this season for the Angels. He may have another chance later in the season.
Jul 5 - 6:41 PM

Angels recalled RHP Cory Rasmus from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Rasmus was optioned to Triple-A on May 13, but he's now needed as a seventh arm in the Angels' bullpen. The 26-year-old allowed two runs in 2 1/3 innings in his first go-round with the Halos earlier this season.
Jun 7 - 5:33 PM

Angels optioned RHP Cory Rasmus to Triple-A Salt Lake.

The move clears a spot for Tuesday's starter, Matt Shoemaker. Rasmus allowed two runs on five hits and one walk in 2 1/3 innings during his brief stint with the Angels.
May 13 - 3:33 PM

Angels recalled RHP Cory Rasmus from Triple-A Salt Lake.

The move gives the Angels a fresh arm for the bullpen. Rasmus made 16 appearances with the Angels last year and had a 2.76 ERA and 13/10 K/BB ratio over his first 16 1/3 innings in Triple-A this season.
