Roger Bernadina homered and singled off the bench Tuesday against the Marlins.
Officially, they were the first two hits of the spring for Bernadina, who played for The Netherlands in the WBC. He had been 0-for-7 in Nationals camp. Bernadina had a great year as a part-timer in 2012, hitting .291/.372/.405 in 227 at-bats. Still, the Nationals didn't consider him for a full-time role this year. He'll struggle to match last year's at-bats total if Bryce Harper, Denard Span and Jayson Werth stay relatively healthy. Mar 26 - 4:09 PM

The financials aren't yet known. Bernadina, who was arbitration-eligible for the first time, sported a nice .291/.372/.405 with five homers and 15 steals in 2012. He's a nice piece to have as an extra outfielder.

Roger Bernadina had a nice night at the plate in the second half of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Braves, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.

Bernadina’s run-scoring single in the seventh inning gave the Nats their first lead of the night and proved to be the eventual winning run. He’s done a nice job as a part-time player in the Nationals' outfield this season, now hitting .278 with two homers, 15 RBI and 10 stolen bases.

Roger Bernadina left Monday's game with an apparent right knee injury.

Roger Bernadina stayed hot by going 2-for-4 with a steal and an RBI in Sunday's loss to the Reds.

Bernadina is running away with the open outfield job as the Nats adjust to life without Jayson Werth (wrist). He's started four straight games, going 6-for-17 with two homers, five RBI and two steals during that span. There's some power/speed upside here.

Roger Bernadina had a strong night against the Reds on Friday, going 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI in a 7-3 victory over the Reds.

Bernadina is being given the chance to claim the starting job in left field, and hasn't disappointed thus far. His first inning homer off of Mike Leake was his second on the season, and he also picked up his third stolen base of the year later in the game. As long as he's going to be receiving regular playing time, he's well worth a look in most leagues.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson indicated Friday that Roger Bernadina will get a chance to claim the starting left field job.

Bernadina has been given numerous opportunities in the past, but he owns a lousy .238/.304/.362 batting in the big leagues. We're not optimistic about his chances for a sudden breakthrough, but his modest power-speed combo makes him worth owning in NL-only leagues for now. Xavier Nady, Tyler Moore, Chad Tracy and Steve Lombardozzi could also get looks in left field while Michael Morse (lat) remains on the shelf.
