Henry Rodriguez - R - Nationals

Despite allowing a hit and walking two, Henry Rodriguez pitched a scoreless inning Wednesday against the Braves.

Rodriguez was troubled by a sore elbow last week, but it hasn't stopped him from pitching two scoreless innings over the last three days. It looks like he'll be on the Nationals' Opening Day roster.

Rodriguez is coming off elbow surgery and hasn't progressed as quickly as hoped this spring, though today's performance looks like a big step forward. He's out of options, so he'll have a bullpen spot if healthy.

Henry Rodriguez told reporters Thursday that he thinks his recent right elbow tightness is "normal."

Rodriguez underwent minor surgery in August 2012 to remove a bone spur from his right elbow and began feeling renewed discomfort this week when he started workouts at the Nationals' spring training complex in Viera, Florida. The Nats will give the righty reliever a full week of rest and hope that he can get back on track.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson said Wednesday that Henry Rodriguez is dealing with a tender elbow.

Not a good sign after Rodriguez had season-ending surgery last August to remove a bone spur from his right elbow. It was assumed that he would have a chance to win a spot in the bullpen this spring, but that could obviously change if the elbow continues to be an issue. The 25-year-old right-hander posted a 5.83 ERA and 31/22 K/BB ratio over 29 2/3 innings last season and was 9-for-12 in save chances.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson said Friday that he anticipates Henry Rodriguez (elbow) having a role in the bullpen in 2013.

That's assuming that he's healthy following elbow surgery and has a good spring training. Rodriguez had a brief stint as the Nats' closer this past season before control problems caused him to be removed from the role. Johnson sees the hard-throwing right-hander pitching anywhere between the sixth and eighth innings in 2013.

The outfielder experienced a setback with his hamstring during a rehab game last week and has yet to return to game action. He was slated to see a specialist over the weekend and evidently didn't receive good news. Roger Bernadina and Tyler Moore will continue to be the primary fill-ins for Werth. May 20
