Toregas was out of baseball last season, but appeared in four games with the Pirates in 2011. He'll serve as an emergency catcher at Triple-A Indianapolis.

Toregas managed to pass through waivers after being designated for assignment by the Bucs on Monday. He's unlikely to get another look unless the Pirates suffer even more injuries behind the plate.

He was jettisoned to open a roster spot for the newly-acquired Mike McKenry. Toregas was called up by the Bucs last week and didn't log a hit in four at-bats over three games. The 28-year-old backstop should pass through waivers and rejoin the organization at the Triple-A level.

Pirates purchased the contract of C Wyatt Toregas from Triple-A Indianapolis.

He'll share playing time with Dusty Brown while Chris Snyder and Ryan Doumit are sidelined with injuries. Toregas hasn't appeared in the big leagues since the 2009 season, when he batted .176 over 51 at-bats with the Indians. The 28-year-old backstop can be ignored in fantasy leagues.

He also received an invitation to major league spring training. The 28-year-old backstop batted .227/.311/.383 in 148 plate appearances last season at the minor league level in the Indians' organization. He had a .176/.267/.196 in 60 plate appearances at the big league level in 2009.

Indians sent C Wyatt Toregas outright to Double-A Akron.

The Tribe designated Toregas for assignment last weekend when they decided that Mike Redmond would be a more suitable backup to starter Lou Marson. Toregas cleared waivers Thursday along with Anderson Hernandez.

The Indians also designated infielder Anderson Hernandez for assignment on the way toward setting their Opening Day roster. Toregas failed to top Lou Marson and Mike Redmond this spring for a spot on the Tribe.

Another catcher was needed in Cleveland with the departure of Victor Martinez. Toregas was batting, 26, was batting .284/.336/.433 in 208 at-bats for Columbus. He'll back up Kelly Shoppach and Chris Gimenez.
