Gimenez is over his late-spring ankle infection and could be ready for activation by the end of April. Texas can really use him after losing Robinson Chirinos (forearm) for the first half of the season.

And the area around his left ankle that became infected late this spring is finally beginning to show improvement. Gimenez should start swinging a bat by early next week and will probably be fully recovered by the middle of May. Texas opened the 2016 regular season with a ton of depth at catcher, but Robinson Chirinos (forearm) is going to be sidelined for the remainder of the first half. Gimenez, a .218/.303/.336 career hitter, is suddenly looking useful.

Gimenez is out of the hospital and should be fine, but he's not ready to play yet. With Bryan Holaday now on the roster, Gimenez probably won't have a spot when he's ready to return.

Gimenez developed some sort of infectionin his left ankle earlier in the week which prompted the hospitalization. He's expected to begin the year on the 15-day disabled list but could be ready to return in mid-April.

Gimenez came down with a left ankle infection earlier this week, and it's worse than the Rangers originally feared. There is no timetable yet for his return. He's presumably off to visit with some specialists.

It's possible he'll try and resume baseball activities Wednesday. "It's going to be tough for him to start the season if he is banged up," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "Right now, we're trying to get him through to where he is available. Right now, he is not available." If Gimenez can't make it back in time for Opening Day, the Rangers will carry either Bobby Wilson or Michael McKenry Robinson Chirinos' backup.

Rangers and C Chris Gimenez avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract.

It's a split contract that will pay out $975,000 while Gimenez is in the majors and far less if he is sent to the minors. The 32-year-old catcher posted a surprising .820 OPS with five home runs in 36 games this summer for Texas. He should see increased exposure as an active backup to Robinson Chirinos in 2016.

Chris Gimenez underwent arthroscopic surgery on Friday to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder.

It's an ailment he played through for a while, but Gimenez went under the knife just two days after the Rangers' season was ended. He'll be fine for spring training.

Chris Gimenez is starting at catcher and hitting eighth for the Rangers in Friday's Game 2 of the ALDS.

Robinson Chirinos homered in Game 1 Thursday, but he's on the bench the next day with the Rangers preferring to pair Gimenez with Cole Hamels. Gimenez hit .255/.330/.490 with five homers in 36 games for Texas this season.

Chris Gimenez hit his first major league homer since 2012 against the Astros on Wednesday.

The homer was the first given up by Scott Kazmir since June 16. It was Gimenez's seventh homer in 459 at-bats. Three of those came in 111 at-bats as a rookie with the Indians in 2009. He hit one each in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and now one in his fourth game of this year. Oddly enough, he also has two steals this year, giving him three total in his career.

Rangers purchased the contract of C Chris Gimenez from Triple-A Round Rock.

He'll back up Robinson Chirinos. Gimenez is hitting .243 with six home runs at Round Rock this season.

Chris Gimenez went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI as the Rangers fell to the Athletics in Cactus League competition.

Gimenez plated a run with an RBI double off R.J. Alvarez in the seventh inning. In camp as a non-roster invitee, he's hitting just .167 in Cactus League play and looks unlikely to crack the Opening Day roster.

Gimenez began the 2014 season with Texas but was traded in August for cash. The 31-year-old will compete for the Rangers' backup catcher job next spring. He is a .210/.297/.302 career hitter in the major leagues.
