James Simmons was shut down at Double-A Midland because of what the A's believe is a dead-arm phase.

He'll be examined further by team doctors. Anderson, the 26th overall pick in the 2007 draft, is one of Oakland's top prospects.

James Simmons - S - Athletics

James Simmons pitched six shutout innings in a win for Double-A Midland on Wednesday.

Simmons, who was drafted 26th overall last year, has allowed two runs and posted a 15/2 K/BB ratio in 17 innings this season. He's polished enough that he could step into Oakland's rotation in the second half if needed.

Athletics selected UC Riverside RHP James Simmons with the 26th pick in the draft.

Simmons gets some sink on his low-90s fastball and shows a plus slider, giving him middle-of-the-rotation potential. He's capable of moving quickly through an A's system lacking pitchers with upside.

	2	Hiroyuki Nakajima D.L. Hiroyuki Nakajima (hamstring) is expected to be added to the major league roster when his 20-day rehab window expires on Wednesday. Nakajima is batting just .250 with a .313 on-base percentage at Triple-A Sacramento, but he's made strides defensively and has also showed he can play second and third base. His role with the big club figures to be limited. May 21

RF	1	Josh Reddick D.L. Josh Reddick (wrist) will try taking batting practice on Friday. If it goes well, he'll be cleared to begin a rehab assignment. If he doesn't suffer any setbacks, it seems possible that he could be activated sometime next week. May 20

Rough news for Anderson, who just can't seem to stay healthy. The 25-year-old southpaw is set to be reevaluated after four weeks, so his actual return to the Athletics likely won't be until around the early part of July. Dan Straily is filling his spot in the rotation for now, but the A's could turn to Sonny Gray if he continues to struggle. May 17
