Chris Narveson has elected free agency.

Narveson was designated for assignment by the Marlins in mid-August and passed through waivers unclaimed. He'll probably have to settle for a minor league contract on the open market this winter after posting an 8.64 ERA across 8 1/3 innings with Miami in 2016.

Marlins purchased the contract of LHP Chris Narveson from Triple-A New Orleans.

Narveson had a brief stint with the Marlins back in April and has posted a 3.48 ERA and 60/26 K/BB ratio over 82 2/3 innings in Triple-A this year. The veteran lefty will provide some bullpen depth.

Chris Narveson threw three scoreless innings for the win as the Marlins beat the Mets 1-0 on Tuesday.

Narveson is aiming for a spot on the Marlins as a middle reliever after amassing a 4.45 ERA in two starts and 13 relief appearances for the club last year. He has a 4.38 ERA and a 7/4 K/BB ratio in 12 1/3 innings this spring.

He scattered four hits and one walk. The Brewers used Narveson as a starter early in his career but almost all of his appearances for the Marlins last season came out of the pen. That should be the case again in 2016.

Chris Narveson allowed two earned runs in 1 1/3 innings as the Marlins fell to the Mets on Sunday.

Narveson was pitching in relief for the Fish after leaving his previous start (on August 31) with a blister on his left middle finger. The veteran southpaw holds a rough 5.73 ERA in 22 innings this season at the major league level. He might not get another start the rest of the way.

It's too bad, as Narveson was pitching well with 5 1/3 scoreless frames. He'll be re-evaluated later this week before it's determined whether he can make his next start.

Chris Narveson was hit hard in a losing effort against the Pirates on Wednesday, serving up seven runs across 3 2/3 innings.

The Pirates exploded for seven runs in the second inning, capped off by Andrew McCutchen's three-run home run which made it 7-1. Narveson, overall, allowed eight hits and three walks while striking out three. It was his first start since April 15, 2012. The Marlins haven't announced if he'll get another start, but if he does, he's on track to face the Braves in Atlanta.
