Phillips was designated for assignment by the Rangers earlier this week after allowing 50 hits and 26 runs in 44 2/3 innings at Triple-A Round Rock. He's only 24, so there is some hope left for a career revitalization.

Phillips has some upside as a left-handed reliever, but he sealed his fate after giving up four hits and walking three in 2 2/3 spring innings. He'll represent depth at Triple-A. RHP Fabio Castillo and OF Engel Beltre went optioned to Double-A, while Brett Tomko was added to the major league camp.
