Pedro Baez is making the switch from position player to pitcher.

The Dodgers were hoping Baez would develop into a power threat at third base, but the soon-to-be 25-year-old is converting to a pitcher after compiling an underwhelming .247/.308/.391 batting line over six seasons in the minors. "They put him on the mound in instructional league and that fastball is really strong," said Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt. "You talk about Kenley when you see the ball come out of his hand. He hasn't been overwhelmed by thinking too much about pitching. He just sees the glove and throws it and that's kind of refreshing." It's safe to say the Dodgers would be pretty pleased if Baez enjoys similar success as Kenley Jansen, a converted catcher.

Pedro Baez went 4-for-4 with a homer, a double and a steal for Single-A Inland Empire on Wednesday.

Baez flopped in the Midwest League last year, causing him to be domoted to the Pioneer League for the second half of the season, but the Dodgers still opted to move him up to high-A ball for the beginning of 2009 and he's responded very well, hitting .289/.341/.526 with five homers. He's one of the two quality third base prospects in the system behind Blake DeWitt.

Pedro Baez went 2-for-4 for Rookie Ogden on Thursday and is off to a 5-for-14 start in the Pioneer League.

Unfortunately, Baez wasn't ready to cut it in the Midwest League as a 20-year-old. He hit .178/.244/.259 in 185 at-bats prior to his demotion. As strong as his arm is, we wonder if the Dodgers wouldn't have been better off developing him as a pitcher.
