Jordan Smith will be shut down for 10 days due to right elbow inflammation.

Smith gets the boot after allowing four runs over one inning of work on Sunday. He has a 7.20 ERA and 13/8 K/BB ratio across 20 innings in two stints with the Reds this season.

Reds recalled RHP Jordan Smith from Triple-A Louisville.

Reds optioned RHP Jordan Smith to Triple-A Louisville.

Smith has really struggled of late, posting a 5.14 ERA over 10 appearances this month, so he'll get a chance to work out his kinks in the minors instead of in the thick of a playoff race. He'll likely be back in September.

Jordan Smith moved to 5-1 for Single-A Sarasota by allowing one run over eight innings on Wednesday.

Smith has a 1.60 ERA and a 29/5 K/BB ratio in 36 1/3 innings. The 2006 sixth-round pick is a long shot to make it as a starting pitcher in the majors, but a switch to the pen could make his already strong fastball even better and increases his chances of receiving an opportunity.

Jordan Smith allowed two hits over seven scoreless innings in a win for low Single-A Dayton on Sunday.

Smith is a starter right now, but the 2006 fifth-round pick could eventually find a home in Cincinnati's bullpen. He's 6-6 with a 3.49 ERA, 82 H and 56/18 K/BB in 87 2/3 IP. His fastball is above average, so if he can come up with a strikeout breaking ball, he'd be someone to watch.
