The 25-year-old outfielder spent the 2013 season in the Astros organization, slashing .234/.356/.309 with three homers, 42 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 121 games. He'll function as organizational depth for the Rangers.

Less than two minutes before the first pitch at Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday, Che-Hsuan Lin was scratched from the lineup, indicating that he may be on his way to Boston.

Manager Bobby Valentine hinted after the game that they would require another outfielder after Jacoby Ellsbury's injury, and Lin fills that role. He's not a tremendous asset offensively and will likely serve as the team's fourth outfielder until Ellsbury returns. Expect Ryan Sweeney, Cody Ross and Darnell McDonald to man the outfield in the meantime.

Red Sox purchased the contract of OF Che-Hsuan Lin from Triple-A Pawtucket.

The move protects him from December's Rule 5 Draft. Lin, 23, batted .245/.340/.305 with two homers, 36 RBI, 28 stolen bases and a .644 OPS over 539 plate appearances this season between Double- and Triple-A. He doesn't do much with the bat, but has solid plate discipline, very good speed and remains an asset defensively in center field.
