Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Tuesday that Andrew Romine getting a chance at the regular center field job has "been discussed."
"We’ve talked about it," Ausmus said. "There are a lot of people in the organization who think he might be our best defensive center fielder – though he hasn’t been out there a ton. It’s been discussed." Just 13 of Romine's 201 career starts in the majors have come in center field. The Tigers aren't really closer now to figuring out who their starter will be there than they were at the beginning of camp, but it seems likely that Romine will remain in a super utility role. Andrew Romine doubled twice Monday, including once in an eight-run eighth inning, as the Tigers came back to beat the Braves 10-7.

Romine homered Saturday, so he's off to quite the power surge this spring. That's three extra-base hits in seven at-bats for a guy who has never had more than nine in a season as a major leaguer (he has six homers, two triples and 19 doubles in 761 career at-bats).

Tigers and INF Andrew Romine avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.3 million contract.

Romine made $900,000 last season and gets a nice raise in his second shot at arbitration eligibility. He saw action in 109 games in 2016, but he hit just .236 with two home runs. The 31-year-old utility man played every infield and outfield position for the Tigers last year and is likely to play all over the field again this year.

Tigers and 3B Andrew Romine avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $900,000 contract.

Romine batted .255/.307/.315 with 10 stolen bases in 109 games. He'll continue to serve in a superutility role for the Tigers this season.

Andrew Romine (groin) went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, and a stolen base in his return to the lineup Monday against the Rangers.

Romine left Friday's game with right groin tightness and sat out the remainder of the weekend. He should continue to share playing time with Dixon Machado at shortstop with Jose Iglesias sidelined.

Andrew Romine was forced to leave Friday's game against the Twins with right groin tightness.

He's considered day-to-day. With Jose Iglesias also on the shelf with an injury, expect Dixon Machado to see the bulk of the action at shortstop over the rest of the weekend.

Making a fourth straight start, Andrew Romine doubled, launched a solo homer and scored two runs in a win over the Indians.

He took Danny Salazar deep in the third inning to get the scoring going and then touched home plate in the fifth after a two-bagger. Romine was playing shortstop Tuesday, but he had started the previous three contests at third base over the struggling Nick Castellanos. We don't expect the Tigers to give up on Castellanos at this point, but Romine has earned some more starts with a nice .290/.338/.419 batting line this season.

Andrew Romine went 2-for-4 and scored a run as the Tigers fell to the Twins on Friday in Motown.

Romine has seen the bulk of the playing time at shortstop for the Tigers in recent weeks due to his defensive prowess, but he is hitting a mere .224/.274/.272 on the season with two homers, 12 RBI and 11 stolen bases.

Andrew Romine went 3-for-4 with two RBI against the Twins in Monday's victory.

The Tigers have soured on Eugenio Suarez, making Romine the primary shortstop by default. They'll be content with the steady defense they'll get from the former Angel. Offensive outbursts like this won't be common at all.

Andrew Romine went 0-for-3 and committed an error Thursday in the loss to the Rangers.

He also had a mental error when he failed to cover second base on what should have been a forceout. It was a pretty dreadful day for a guy who is only in the lineup for his defense. He's hitless in six starts over the last 11 days, and he's down to .173 in 81 at-bats for the season. It should mean more Danny Worth at shortstop for the Tigers.

Andrew Romine went hitless again, going 0-for-3 in a losing effort against the Twins on Friday.

Another disappointing night at the dish brings his season slash to a disappointing .218/.317/.236. While the Tigers lack better options at the moment, one has to wonder how long they'll accept virtually no offensive production from the shortstop position.

Andrew Romine went 3-for-5 with two runs scored in a win over the Royals on Sunday.

Romine, serving as the Tigers' de facto starting shortstop, collected three singles against starter Jason Vargas and the Royals bullpen. He'll continue to start the majority of the games at short and bat near the bottom of the Tigers' lineup for the foreseeable future, making him an AL-only option for the time being.

Andrew Romine is in the Tigers' lineup for Monday night's game against the White Sox, playing shortstop for a fourth consecutive game.

Romine, a switch-hitter, will face a lefty starter in John Danks for the third game in a row. The Tigers are in desperate need of help at shortstop, as they have had a .538 OPS from the position on the season, the third-worst mark in the American League. Romine hasn't been much help, posting a .650 OPS in 25 plate appearances.

Andrew Romine is starting at shortstop for the Tigers on Thursday afternoon against the Royals.

Alex Gonzalez will get a day off after starting the first two games of the season at short. The Tigers still don't have a good replacement for Jose Iglesias, who is out for the year with dual shin fractures.

Tigers acquired INF Andrew Romine from the Angels in exchange for LHP Jose Alvarez.

Romine will give the Tigers another option at shortstop as they look to replace Jose Iglesias (shins). He's the favorite to see the lion's share of at-bats versus right-handers, with Hernan Perez or Danny Worth starting against lefties. The 28-year-old isn't much at the plate (he's hit .250/.303/.270 over 74 games in the majors), but he can run a bit. It's possible he'll wind up with some deep league value as a cheap speed option.
