Yankees signed INF Deibinson Romero to a minor league contract.

Romero batted .253/.328/.449 with 12 home runs and 50 RBI over 76 games last year in the Korea Baseball Organization -- a very hitter-friendly league. The 29-year-old is merely minor league depth for the Yankees.

Deibinson Romero has agreed to a deal with the Doosan Bears of the Korea Baseball Organization, according to Doosan and the Yonhap News Agency.

The Bears are expected to negotiate a buyout with the Pirates soon to finalize the deal. Romero, 28, signed a minor league deal with Pittsburgh over the winter and was batting .302/.403/.458 with six home runs and 27 RBI over 38 games with Triple-A Indianapolis this season. He has played 10 seasons in the minors, but never reached the major leagues.

Pirates prospect Deibinson Romero entered Sunday with a .750 slugging percentage in 13 games for Triple-A Indianapolis.

That leads all International League hitters. He also leads the IL in OPS (1.221) and is third in on base percentage (.471). The 28-year-old has hit .458 during his six-game hitting streak. Romero has logged over 3,000 minor league at-bats in his career. If Romero can keep up this torrid pace, 2015 might be the year he finally reaches the big leagues.

Romero spent the 2014 season with the Twins' Triple-A affiliate in Rochester, New York, where he hit .265/.364/.406 with eight home runs and 45 RBI in 123 games. Deibinson Romero went 3-for-4 with a homer and a double Tuesday for low Single-A Beloit.

Romero is hitting .295 in 10 games since returning from minor knee surgery. Overall, the 21-yhear-old is batting .250/.278/.400 in 100 at-bats. The Twins had to be hoping for more based on the promise he showed in Rookie ball last year.

Twins prospect Deibinson Romero will miss three to four weeks because of surgery Tuesday to repair torn meniscus in his right knee.

Romero, 21, was hitting .214/.242/.339 in 56 at-bats for low Single-A Beloit before going down.

Rookie Elizabethon's Deibinson Romero went 4-for-5 with three homers and 10 RBI on Monday.

Romero didn't have a homer this season before exploding yesterday. The 20-year-old third baseman is hitting .300/.419/.483 in 60 at-bats. He also impressed in the GCL last year, so he's a prospect. The test will be how he fares in full-season ball in 2008.
