Astros released LHP Joe Thatcher.
Thatcher was designated for assignment a week ago despite a decent 3.79 ERA with 22 strikeouts over 19 innings this season. He obviously has his limitations as a left-handed specialist, but someone will pick him up. Jul 29 - 8:40 AM

Astros designated LHP Joe Thatcher for assignment.

The move clears a spot for Vince Velasquez on the active roster. Thatcher has struggled a bit recently, but owns a decent 3.79 ERA with 22 strikeouts over 19 innings this season in a specialist role. He could draw interest on waivers.

Astros purchased the contract of LHP Joe Thatcher from Triple-A Fresno.

Thatcher pretty much just had to not get hurt in order to make the team, and he cemented his case with a 1.23 ERA this spring. The veteran southpaw will be a lefty specialist.

Astros signed LHP Joe Thatcher to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

He'll earn $1 million if he makes the roster (which shouldn't be an issue as long as he's healthy) with an addition $1.3 million available in incentives. Thatcher is a prototypical LOOGY, as he's pitched under 40 innings each of the last five seasons. He's good at what he does, though, boasting a career 3.40 ERA and 244/79 K/BB ratio over 238 innings while holding lefties to a .230/.289/.351 batting line.

One source told Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle that they believe the Astros will sign Joe Thatcher to a minor league contract.

However, another source was more "cautious" about predicting Thatcher would sign with Houston. It's hard to believe the lefty reliever would have to settle for a minor league deal, as Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reported earlier Thursday that Thatcher was in talks with 10-plus teams. He held a 3.86 ERA and 27/4 K/BB ratio in 30 1/3 innings last season.
Feb 12 - 9:31 PM

According to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish, free agent Joe Thatcher is in talks with 10-plus clubs, including the Mets, Astros, Athletics, and Rangers.

Thatcher is expected to settle with a team soon. The 33-year-old left-hander posted a cool 3.86 ERA and 27/4 K/BB ratio in 30 1/3 innings last season between the Diamondbacks and Angels. With so much interest, he shouldn't have to settle for a minor league contract.
Feb 12 - 2:44 PM

Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com reports that five-plus teams are in on Joe Thatcher.

Cotillo adds that while there's plenty of interest, "no signing is imminent." Thatcher is coming off a fine season, having put up a 3.86 ERA and 27/4 K/BB ratio across 30 1/3 innings. The 33-year-old is likely to require only a one-year contract.
Jan 30 - 5:59 PM

Joe Thatcher is not on the Angels' ALDS roster.

Vinnie Pestano will get the final bullpen spot instead. Thatcher allowed 13 hits and six earned runs in 6 1/3 innings this season for the Angels after being acquired in July from the Diamondbacks.

Angels activated LHP Joe Thatcher from the 15-day disabled list.

Thatcher returns to join an incredibly deep and talented Angels bullpen. He provides another strong option from the left side.

Joe Thatcher (ankle) is expected to return from the disabled list this weekend.

Thatcher met up with the Angels on Tuesday in Arlington, Texas and is scheduled to make a simulated appearance Wednesday. If that goes well, he could be activated on Friday. The left-hander has been on the shelf since August 3 because of a sprained ankle.

Joe Thatcher (ankle) will meet up with the Angels on Tuesday in Arlington, Texas.

Thatcher is going to be evaluated by team doctors and will then either be activated or asked to throw a simulated game. The lefty has been on the disabled list since August 3 with a sprained ankle. He struggled in a rehab appearance Saturday at Double-A Arkansas.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Tuesday that Joe Thatcher (ankle) could be 7-10 days away from a return.

Thatcher had a setback last week when throwing off a mound, but the hope is that he's not far off. The left-hander has been on the shelf since early August with a sprained left ankle.

Joe Thatcher (ankle) recently tried to throw off a mound but said "it didn’t go well."

Despite the setback, the veteran left-hander is still hoping to return in mid-September. He's been out since early August with a sprained left ankle. "My arm is in shape," he said, "so as soon as my ankle is ready, I’ll be ready to go. There’s no build-up process."

Joe Thatcher (ankle) has begun running and hopes to throw a bullpen session on Saturday.

It's good news, though he's still at least a couple weeks away from a return. Thatcher has been sidelined since early August with a sprained left ankle.
