Nationals re-signed RHP J.D. Martin to a minor league contract.

The Nats released Martin last month but have decided to bring him back. The 28-year-old has made 24 starts the last two seasons with Washington, posting a solid 4.32 ERA but a 1.41 WHIP and 4.9 K/9 rate. His 2010 season ended prematurely due to back surgery. Martin should compete for a bullpen spot in spring training.

Nationals released RHP J.D. Martin.

Martin, 27, had a decent 4.13 ERA over nine starts with the Nationals last season before undergoing back surgery in August. He also struck out 31 batters against only 11 walks. Other teams should come calling.

According to Bill Ladson of MLB.com, the Nationals are expected to remove J.D. Martin from the 40-man roster.

The Nats have some maneuvering to do with some of their newest acquisitions, so Martin could be the first to go. The 27-year-old right-hander posted a 4.13 ERA and 31/11 K/BB ratio over nine starts with the Nationals last season before he underwent surgery to repair herniated discs in his back in August.

J.D. Martin (back) will throw a bullpen session Friday.

It will be Martin's first bullpener since undergoing back surgery to repair herniated discs in mid-August. The right-hander posted a 4.13 ERA and 1.40 WHIP last season and will battle for a bullpen job this spring.

J.D. Martin underwent season-ending surgery to repair the herniated discs in his back.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Watkins in California. Martin is expected to be ready for spring training next season. The 27-year-old right-hander was 1-5 with a 4.13 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in nine starts with the Nationals this season.

J.D. Martin will have season-ending surgery to repair a bulging disc in his lower back.

"It was a little bit worse than we thought, so it's going to require a little surgery," Martin said via phone. "It's just a cleanup. It's a pretty easy procedure, the doctor said. After rehab, I'll be ready to be strong and for next spring training." Martin was likely already out for the season after being placed on the 60-day DL, and now we have some closure to the situation.

Nationals transferred RHP J.D. Martin from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Martin was placed on disabled list on July 25 with a lower back strain, so this essentially ends his season. The roster move clears a spot on the 40-man roster, most likely for outfielder Kevin Mench.

Nationals placed RHP J.D. Martin on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain.

Martin was removed after just 2 1/3 innings in Saturday's loss to the Brewers. Originally, the team said the early hook was performance-related, but clearly Martin was suffering from back pain. The Nationals will have to find a replacement for him in the rotation by Friday.

J.D. Martin is expected to land on the disabled list with a strained lower back.

The Nationals originally said he was pulled from Saturday's start after 2 1/3 innings due to performance reasons, but clearly his back played a huge part in the decision. Martin's injury means Collin Balester, who was called up Saturday for bullpen help, will remain with the team a few more days until the team needs someone to fill in for Martin, which will likely be Friday. Balester was slated to be sent back down Sunday when Ross Detwiler was recalled to join the rotation.

Nationals starter J.D. Martin was pulled after just 2 1/3 innings in Saturday's loss to the Brewers.

The Nats said later that Martin was pulled to a manager's decision, not because of a specific injury. Odd. He allowed one earned run, walked three and struck out three batters. He now has a 4.12 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP.

J.D. Martin dropped to 1-5 after surrendering six runs in 5 1/3 innings Monday against the Reds.

With his below average arsenal, Martin has to be very fine to succeed. He's pitched pretty well for the Reds overall, but this is the second time in eight starts that he's given up six earned runs. He's not recommended in NL-only leagues.

J.D. Martin gave up three runs -- none of them earned -- over 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Orioles on Friday night.

Martin gave up six hits while striking out two and walking one. All three runs in the fifth inning were unearned thanks to a pair of errors by shortstop Ian Desmond. Despite a 3.03 ERA and 20/2 K/BB ratio over his first five starts, Martin is still without a win. He'll try again with a matchup against the Braves next week.

J.D. Martin hurled six innings of one-run ball in a tough-luck loss to the White Sox on Saturday.

The Nationals have lost five straight games and seven of their last eight. Martin scattered eight hits -- all of them singles -- while striking out six and walking none. The lone run scored on an RBI single by Carlos Quentin in the fourth inning. Martin has a respectable 3.55 ERA and an excellent 18/1 K/BB ratio over his first four starts this season. He's been great until this point, but he doesn't strike many batters out and allows too many flyballs to much of an option in fantasy leagues.
