Phillies released OF-1B John Bowker.

Bowker is headed to Japan, where he's found a more substantial contract and a better shot at regular playing time. The 28-year-old batted .133/.188/.167 across 32 plate appearances last season for the Pirates and Phils.

Phillies acquired OF-1B John Bowker from the Pirates for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Bowker will join the Phillies on Wednesday and is eligible for the postseason roster. While the 28-year-old has enjoyed plenty of success in the minor leagues, he has an underwhelming .237/.289/.390 batting line over 609 major league plate appearances. He'll audition as a lefty bench bat during the month of September.

According to Jim Salisbury of, the Phillies have acquired outfielder John Bowker from the Pirates.

It's not yet clear who the Phillies will give up, but he is expected to take the place of Michael Schwimer on the active roster. Bowker, 28, owns a lousy .237/.289/.390 batting line over 609 major league plate appearances. At the very least, he'll give Charlie Manuel a lefty bat off the bench who is capable of playing first base and the outfield.

Pirates sent OF John Bowker outright to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Bowker successfully cleared waivers after being designated for assignment last week. He's certainly useful depth to have around at the Triple-A level.

Pirates designated OF John Bowker for assignment.

Bowker hit .235 with no home runs in 17 at-bats as a pinch-hitter for the Bucs. He'll be replaced on the roster by Xavier Paul, who was claimed off waivers.

John Bowker homered in a second straight game Sunday as part of the Pirates' 9-4 defeat of the Red Sox.

Bowker was a spring training stud for the Giants last year, finishing with six homers and 23 RBI in 77 at-bats. However, it didn't carry over to the regular season and he was sent to Pittsburgh as part of the Javier Lopez deal. So far this spring, he's 6-for-18. There's a reasonable chance that he'd outhit Garrett Jones given the chance, but he'll be fortunate just to earn a spot on Pittsburgh's bench.

John Bowker is day-to-day with left wrist soreness.

The Pirates think he will be able to resume playing in spring games soon. Bowker, 27, posted a poor .652 OPS across 151 at-bats last season and probably won't be relevant in any sort of fantasy league here in 2011. The Bucs will use him as a backup corner outfielder.

John Bowker (knee) went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in his return to the Pirates' lineup Monday against the Cardinals.

Bowker left Saturday's game against the Astros and was held out Sunday because of soreness in his right knee. He should be fine moving forward. The outfielder is hitting .204/.260/.365 on the season.

John Bowker (knee) is aiming to return to the lineup Monday.

Bowker was lifted from Saturday's game against the Astros because of soreness in his right knee. He reported feeling better on Sunday, though, and probably could have been used as a pinch-hitter. The outfielder is batting .209/.265/.373 with five homers and 17 RBI this season.

John Bowker left Saturday's game with a sore right knee.

Bowker was 0-for-2 before exiting. He was replaced in right field by Alex Presley, who could draw a rare start on Sunday against the Astros.

John Bowker went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI in Saturday's home victory over the Diamondbacks.

Bowker is expected to see an increase in playing time now that Lastings Milledge is sidelined, and he got off to a good start Saturday. Still, the guy is batting .205 on the year and is not fantasy-relevant.

Pirates recalled OF John Bowker from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Bowker was acquired from the Giants as part of the Javier Lopez trade last month. The 27-year-old outfielder has batted .313/.382/.587 with 18 home runs and 46 RBI between Triple-A Fresno (Giants) and Triple-A Indianapolis (Pirates) this season. With the ability to play first base and the outfield, he may end up being a useful bench player in Pittsburgh.

Pirates acquired OF John Bowker and RHP Joe Martinez from the Giants for LHP Javier Lopez.

Maybe a change of scenery will help Bowker, who's posted a .238/.285/.394 big league batting line in parts of three seasons. The 27-year-old will probably head to Triple-A Indianapolis initially, but he could factor into the Bucs' future as a fourth or fifth outfielder.

Giants optioned outfielder John Bowker to Triple-A Fresno.

Bowker can hit, but if the Giants weren't willing to give him an extended opportunity this year, they probably never will. The 26-year-old was batting .207/.256/.354 in 82 at-bats for the season.
