Rays optioned RHP Rob Delaney to Triple-A Durham.

That was fast. Fresh up from the minors, Delaney allowed three runs on four hits over three innings against the A's in relief of James Shields on Wednesday night. He threw 66 pitches, so he likely would have been unavailable for the next couple of days, anyway. The Rays will make a corresponding roster move prior to Thursday's game.

The move frees up a roster spot for J.P. Howell, who will be activated on Friday after missing over a year with shoulder issues. Delaney did not make the most of his call up, allowing three runs on four walks in just two innings of work. He shouldn't be back in the big leagues any time soon.

Delaney spent the majority of last season at Triple-A Rochester, posting a 4.72 ERA and 92/23 K/BB ratio over 80 innings. He made his major league debut last September. The 26-year-old right-hander could be a dark horse to make Tampa Bay's in-flux bullpen as a middle reliever.

Twins designated RHP Rob Delaney for assignment.

Delaney made his major league debut last September, but spent the majority of the season at Triple-A Rochester, posting a 4.72 ERA and 92/23 K/BB ratio over 80 innings. The 26-year-old right-hander was likely going to be in the mix for a bullpen spot, so this is a surprising decision.
