Padres released RHP Eddie Kunz.
Kunz was a supplemental first-round pick of the Mets in 2007, but he has failed to live up to the hype. The 26-year-old right-hander hasn't pitched in the majors since 2008 and posted a 5.77 ERA and 39/39 K/BB ratio over 87 1/3 innings last season between Double- and Triple-A. Padres acquired RHP Eddie Kunz from the Mets for 1B Allan Dykstra.

Kunz was a supplemental first round pick of the Mets back in 2007 but has struggled mightily in the minors both as a starter and a reliever. The Padres will hope that a change of scenery will light a fire in the big-bodied right-hander. He's likely to open the year at Triple-A.

Mets sent RHP Eddie Kunz outright to Triple-A Buffalo.

The 24-year-old right-hander posted a 5.34 ERA and 63/68 K/BB ratio in 12 starts and 30 relief appearances with Double-A Binghamton this past season. The former 2007 supplemental first-round pick continues to be a massive disappointment.

Mets optioned RHPs Eddie Kunz and Clint Everts to Triple-A Norfolk; optioned 3B Shawn Bowman to Double-A Binghamton; reassigned RHPs R.A. Dickey, Jack Egbert, Josh Fogg, LHPs Travis Blackley, Arturo Lopez, Eric Niesen and Bobby Livingston, INFs Andy Green, Luis Hernandez, Mike Hessman, Mike Cervenak and Jesus Feliciano and OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis to minor league camp.

Slowed after tweaking a side muscle while swinging a bat early in camp, Fogg failed to make a Grapefruit League appearance. It's safe to say you won't be hearing Kunz's name in a "closer of the future" debate any time soon. He allowed five runs in 2 1/3 innings of work this spring. Niesen could be an interesting option out of the pen as a second left-hander if he continues to progress this season.

Eddie Kunz surrendered four runs while retiring just one batter Wednesday versus the Braves.

He allowed a double, a single and three walks before departing. Kunz debuted in the majors just over a year after the Mets made him a supplemental first-round pick in 2007, but he's been going backwards ever since. He's not in the team's plans for this year, and if he doesn't shape up, he might even find himself off the 40-man roster at some point.

Eddie Kunz may be used as a starting pitcher in the minor leagues this season.

He was told of the potential plan by minor-league field coordinator Terry Collins on Tuesday. Kunz, who turns 24 in April, hasn't started since high school. The former supplemental first-round pick possesses a heavy sinker and is known as a groundball pitcher, however his subpar command has proved to be a liability in the minors. Kunz has reservations about the plan, but the Mets hope the strategy will force the towering right-hander to become more developed.

Eddie Kunz pitched three scoreless innings, striking out five, Tuesday for Triple-A Buffalo.

Kunz, a 2007 supplemental first-round pick who made his major league debut last August, was a pretty early cut last month, but he's working to make sure the Mets don't bury him. He's allowed just two hits in 6 1/3 scoreless innings to date.

Mets optioned RHP Eddie Kunz to Triple-A New Orleans; reassigned C Josh Thole, LHP Valerio De los Santos and OF Rob Mackowiak to minor league camp.

Kunz was talked about as a closer for a brief time last August, but he was back in the minors in September and he wasn't given any sort of chance to make the team this spring. He gets sent down after allowing one run in three innings.

Eddie Kunz was torched for eight runs in one-third of an inning in his AFL appearance on Friday.

Sadly, he might not have even been the Saguaros' worst pitch in the game. Brad Furnish relieved in the fourth and gave up seven runs without recording an out. Kunz came into a 10-10 tie in the top of the ninth and proceeded to reopen the flood gates. He had pitched four scoreless innings entering the game.

Mets optioned RHP Eddie Kunz to Triple-A New Orleans.

His departure makes room on the roster for Luis Ayala, who was acquired over the weekend. Kunz was called up from Double-A last month after saving 27 games with a 2.79 ERA there, but never got a chance in the late innings despite the Mets' bullpen problems and Billy Wagner's injury. Now he heads to Triple-A, before likely returning in September.

According to the New York Post, the Mets are considering using Eddie Kunz at closer until Billy Wagner returns from the disabled list.

That seemed like a potential option when the Mets called Kunz up from Double-A, but instead he's rarely been used in crucial spots. Not trusting him in high-leverage situations and then thrusting him into the closer role makes little sense, but manager Jerry Manuel is no doubt searching for anything that might work at this point. The newspaper also suggests that the Mets could briefly use John Maine at closer, but handing him ninth-inning duties fresh off the DL would be another odd move. Wagner is due back Monday.

Mets manager Jerry Manuel hinted that Eddie Kunz could be sent down when John Maine is activated off the DL to start on Wednesday.

He'd go from potential closer to minor leaguer in a week. Kunz has allowed one run and two hits in 2 1/3 innings since being called up last week. It seems the Mets will move Brian Stokes - who gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings on Saturday - to the bullpen

Eddie Kunz gave up his first homer as a pro to the Padres' Chase Headley on Wednesday.

Kunz pitched 60 1/3 innings in the minors without allowing a long ball, but he surrendered one in just his second inning as a major leaguer. Manager Jerry Manuel said before Wednesday's game that he wouldn't be afraid to use Kunz to close out a game. Still, there's little reason to think Kunz is ready for that responsibility now.

Mets purchased the contract of RHP Eddie Kunz from Double-A Binghamton.

Kunz, a supplemental first-round pick last year, had a 2.79 ERA and 27 saves as Binghamton's closer. He projects as a long-term setup man for the Mets with his ability to induce grounders, but the command might not be there yet. The Mets may use him late in games right away with Billy Wagner hurting.
