Matt Joyce went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored in Sunday's loss to the Reds.
Joyce connected for a solo home run off Reds starter Dan Straily in the fifth inning. The dinger was his 12th of the season. In addition, the veteran outfielder has driven in 38 runs while hitting to a .273/.403/.552 triple-slash across 165 at-bats. Given that he doesn't even start on an everyday basis, these are phenomenal part-time numbers. Aug 7 - 5:16 PM

Matt Joyce hit a three-run homer and walked Wednesday to raise his OPS to .983.

It's hard to fathom, but the Pirates would probably be a couple of games better off in the standings right now had Andrew McCutchen simply sat out the season. Joyce has been phenomenal as the Pirates' fourth outfielder and likely would be doing just fine had he been starting regularly against righties.
Aug 3 - 10:58 PM

Matt Joyce homered and had four RBI in Thursday's win over the Brewers.

Joyce hit a three-run home run off Brewers starter Matt Garza in the first inning, his only hit in three at-bats. The homer was the ninth of the year for Joyce but his first since June 24. The 31-year-old part-time player is batting a strong .277/.404/.539 overall.
Jul 21 - 10:41 PM

Matt Joyce (quad) returned to the Pirates starting lineup on Friday, going 0-for-4 with a strikeout in a loss to the Nationals.

To be fair, most of the Pirates hitters had a tough time getting anything going against Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg. Joyce missed the final game before the break due to tightness in his quad. He's having a nice season at the dish, slashing .286/.410/.541 with eight homers and 27 RBI in 161 plate appearances.
Jul 16 - 8:56 AM

Matt Joyce (quad) flied out as a pinch-hitter on Sunday afternoon against the Cubs.

Joyce left Saturday's game after experiencing tightness in his left quad. That minor injury should be fully healed by the conclusion of the All-Star break. Joyce, 31, has an impressive .979 OPS in 129 at-bats this season.
Jul 11 - 7:53 AM

Matt Joyce left Saturday's game against the Cubs with left quad tightness.

Joyce wasn't in the starting lineup but he pinch-hit for Josh Harrison in the third inning and stayed in the game to play right field. Adam Frazier replaced Joyce in right at the start of the sixth inning. Joyce grounded out and drew an intentional walk in his two plate appearances. He's day-to-day.
Jul 9 - 10:48 PM

Matt Joyce went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored in an 8-6 win over the Dodgers on Friday.

Joyce plated a run with a single in the fifth inning and later socked a solo homer in the seventh. The Pirate signed the 31-year-old to a minor league deal over the offseason and he has proved to be quite the find. He’s now batting .305/.434/.619 with eight homers and 26 RBI through 63 games.
Jun 24 - 10:44 PM

Matt Joyce had a two-run double in Thursday's loss to the Marlins.

Joyce got a rare start in right field with Gregory Polanco getting a breather, and he delivered with the two-RBI double in the seventh inning. Joyce has been used sparingly but with great effectiveness thus far this year, batting .324 with a 1.091 OPS in 68 at-bats.
Jun 3 - 12:42 AM

Matt Joyce went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBI in Monday's victory over the Braves.

Joyce just keeps producing when given an opportunity. He plated a run with an RBI single in the first, had an infield single and scored in the fifth and then took Alexi Ogando deep with a two-run homer in the seventh. After batting just .174/.272/.291 for the Angels last season, Joyce is hitting .372/.500/.767 with five longballs in his first 43 at-bats for Pittsburgh.
May 16 - 10:53 PM

Matt Joyce singled and slugged a three-run homer in Monday's win over the Rockies.

Joyce was making a rare start with Andrew McCutchen getting a night off and he sure made it count. The veteran outfielder has been a quality man off the bench for the Pirates so far, batting .320/.485/.600.
Apr 26 - 12:18 AM

Matt Joyce clubbed a pinch-hit, three-run homer in a losing effort against the Brewers on Friday.

Joyce certainly made the most of his lone at-bat on Friday, taking Jimmy Nelson deep in the seventh inning to account for the bulk of the Bucs offense in defeat. He's off to a nice start to the season, slashing .273/.500/.636 with four RBI, though his fantasy value remains limited due to inconsistent at-bats.
Apr 15 - 10:45 PM

Matt Joyce is serving as the Pirates' designated hitter on Monday in Detroit.

Joyce is a .350 career hitter (with two home runs) against Tigers starter Justin Verlander, if you're into that sort of thing. He will bat third for the Bucs in Monday's early-afternoon series opener.
Apr 11 - 10:06 AM

Pirates purchased the contract of OF Matt Joyce from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Joyce batted just .174/.272/.291 in 93 games last season, but he's a better hitter than that, particularly against righties. He could be a nice bench option for the Pirates.
Apr 3 - 9:51 AM

Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said Tuesday morning that Matt Joyce will be on the Opening Day roster.

Joyce, a non-roster invitee, is batting .243/.391/.541 over 17 games this spring. The Orioles reportedly had interest in the 31-year-old, but he has won a spot on Pittsburgh's bench.
Mar 29 - 9:29 AM

Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the Orioles are interested in Matt Joyce.

Joyce is a non-roster invitee this spring and the Pirates have until Tuesday to decide whether to add him to the active roster. If he isn't, Baltimore could be a good fit, as they are on the lookout for a left-handed hitting outfielder. The club signed Hyun-Soo Kim to a two-year, $7 million deal over the winter, but things haven't worked out as hoped this spring.
