Angels and OF Matt Joyce avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $4.75 million contract.
It's a shade over the midpoint of figures exchanged last month. Joyce was arbitration-eligible for a final time this offseason and is slated to hit free agency next winter. Acquired from the Rays in December, Joyce is slated for designated hitter duty for the Angels but could play some corner outfield until Josh Hamilton (shoulder) is ready. Feb 9 - 6:59 PM

Matt Joyce requested $5.2 million and was offered $4.2 million from the Angels when arbitration figures were exchanged Friday.

It's a sizable difference, but the two sides should be able to find some common ground. He's expected to see fairly regular playing time against right-handed pitching where he has proven to be an offensive weapon.

Angels acquired OF/DH Matt Joyce from the Rays for RHP Kevin Jepsen.

Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports first reported the trade. Joyce figures to pair with C.J. Cron at DH and can cover the corner outfield spots when necessary. With Josh Hamilton around, it's a nice insurance move. Joyce batted .254/.349/.383 with nine home runs and 52 RBI over 140 games this past season.

Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports that the Rays continue to discuss Matt Joyce trades with teams.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reported last week that Joyce is drawing more interest than David DeJesus in potential trades and Cotillo writes that a deal may come down in the near future. MLB Trade Rumors projects Joyce to make $4.9 million next season in his final year of arbitration. The 30-year-old could have some value in a platoon role.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that Matt Joyce is drawing more interest than David DeJesus in potential trades.

DeJesus, who turns 35 later this month, struggled through a hand injury this past season and is owed $5 million next season with a $1 million buyout on a $5 million club option for 2016. MLB Trade Rumors projects Joyce to make $4.9 million next season in his final year of arbitration. He batted .254 with nine homers and a .732 OPS this past season and could be a strong fit as a platoon player.

FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that the Rays have made Matt Joyce available for trade.

It's not surprising, as the Rays are in cost-cutting mode and Joyce is due another raise in what will be his final year of arbitration. The 30-year-old's OPS has been in a steady decline the last few years, bottoming out in 2014 at .732 when he hit just nine homers. Still, he can be a useful bat and the Rays should be able to find a taker for him.

Matt Joyce had a rough night at the plate in Friday's loss to the Red Sox, going 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts.

Joyce, who normally terrorizes right-handed pitching, had a rare off-night in this contest, but did at least manage to draw a walk. He's now slashing .269/.366/.409 with eight homers and 50 RBI on the season.

Matt Joyce hit his eighth homer, walked and scored three times Wednesday against the Rangers.

Joyce has remained an asset in Tampa Bay's lineup while still being pretty irrelevant for fantasy leagues. On the plus side, he's hitting .283 after finishing at .241 in 2012 and .235 last year. However, the homers are down, he's 1-for-5 stealing bases and his 42 runs scored and 47 RBI aren't anything special.

Matt Joyce went 5-for-6 with a double, two home runs, and four RBI in Sunday's win over the Orioles.

A career day for Joyce, who notched five hits in a game for the first time in his career, and blasted two home runs in a game for only the third time. Joyce, who has faced right-handed pitching almost exclusively, is slashing .274/.360/.425 with five home runs and 33 RBI on the season.

Matt Joyce went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored against the Orioles on Tuesday.

Joyce doubled off Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez and scored in the fifth inning, and he also added a single in the game. Joyce has hits in five straight games to bring his average up to .270, but he's still sitting on three home runs for the year. The 29-year-old is on pace for his lowest home run output of any full season in his career.

Matt Joyce went 1-for-2 with a two-run double and two walks against the Astros on Friday.

Progress? Joyce has three RBI over his last two games after collecting just one RBI over his previous 12 games. Still, the 29-year-old hasn't homered since May 11 and has just three on the year so far. It's tough to have much enthusiasm for him in mixed leagues right now.

Matt Joyce went 3-for-3 with a double before being removed for a pinch-hitter Wednesday against the Marlins.

Joyce had a nice game against a pitch in Tom Koehler who had dominated left-handed hitters this season, but he was pulled when it came time for him to face a lefty. He broke out of an 0-for-16 slump with the performance and pushed his average back up to .273. Unfortunately, his power has been surprisingly absent, with no homers since May 11 and just three all season. It leaves him with very little mixed-league value.

Matt Joyce went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a run scored in Wednesday's loss to the Blue Jays.

The Rays weren't able to muster much offense against Liam Hendriks and the Jays' bullpen despite Joyce's best efforts. Joyce has been productive for the Rays, slashing .281/.378/.411, facing right-handed pitching in an overwhelming percentage of his 180 plate appearances.

Matt Joyce went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in Sunday's loss to the Indians.

Joyce's home run in the first inning was his third of the season. He also singled in a run in the fourth inning. The outfielder has enjoyed a productive season despite the drop in power, batting .287/.388/.446 in 36 games.

Matt Joyce drew five walks and had an RBI in Friday's loss to the White Sox.

One of them was with the bases loaded. Joyce is the first American League hitter to draw five unintentional walks in a game since Alex Rodriguez did it with the Mariners in 2000.
