Sam Fuld has announced his retirement from baseball.
Fuld, who turns 36 later this month, hasn't played anywhere since 2015 after having shoulder surgery last May. The speedster batted only .227/.307/.325 across parts of eight big league seasons but was a gifted defensive outfielder. Fuld is taking a job in the Phillies organization as major league player information coordinator. Fri, Nov 3, 2017 02:19:00 PM

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the Rays are "among several teams" who are staying in contact with free agent outfielder Sam Fuld (shoulder).

Fuld underwent shoulder surgery last May. He did not receive a major league plate appearance in 2016 and is expected to be out until at least early summer in the coming campaign as he rehabs from that procedure. In the season prior to his health concerns, Fuld, 35, hit a mere .197/.276/.293 with 16 doubles and nine steals over the course of 290 at-bats with the A's in 2015.

Sam Fuld (shoulder) is facing a 12-15 month recovery.

His surgery will be performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache no later than May 18. With Fuld set to miss a good chunk of 2017, it could be hard for the veteran to find work this offseason. The 34-year-old's contract expires at the end of 2016.

Sam Fuld announced Friday that he'll undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff.

He's scheduled to have the procedure done on May 18. Fuld suffered the injury late in spring training. He'll miss the entire 2016 campaign and hope to come back strong next year.

Athletics transferred OF Sam Fuld from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Sean Manaea. Fuld remains out indefinitely with a strained shoulder.

Sam Fuld (shoulder) is still doing strengthening work.

A's trainer Nick Paparesta told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle on Tuesday that Fuld will be eased back into baseball activities. There is no timetable for his return to Oakland's active roster. He'll have a checkup with team doctors in 10 days.

Athletics placed OF Sam Fuld on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained shoulder.

Fuld hurt his shoulder in a game against the Reds on March 19 and hasn't played since. There's no timetable for his return. Fuld hit just .197 last year and won't be a fantasy option even after his shoulder heals up.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Thursday that Sam Fuld (shoulder) is "not close" to returning to game action.

The hope had been that Fuld would be ready to resume swinging a bat this weekend, but that won't happen. He's been battling a right shoulder strain for a couple weeks and can be considered out indefinitely.

Sam Fuld (shoulder) hopes to resume swinging a bat this weekend.

Fuld recently received platelet-rich plasma and cortisone injections for a moderate strain in his right shoulder. He's set to begin the season on the disabled list, but could be an option for the A's at some point in April if he can avoid setbacks.

Sam Fuld was given a cortisone injection Wednesday for his balky right shoulder.

Fuld also received platelet-rich plasma treatment to hopefully help expedite the recovery. Fuld will open the 2016 season on the 15-day disabled list with a moderate right shoulder sprain, but the A's are hoping to have him available by the middle of April.

Sam Fuld flew to Los Angeles to get a second opinion on his injured shoulder.

He met with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the same doctor who performed teammate Jarrod Parker's Tommy John surgery. Fuld's MRI revealed a moderate shoulder sprain but meeting with ElAttrache is never a good sign. His absence will create more at-bats for Chris Coghlan.

Sam Fuld is expected to miss the next three weeks with what is being termed a moderate shoulder sprain.

Given the timetable, it's likely that Fuld will begin the regular season on the 15-day disabled list. He's never been much of a hitter, but the A's do seem to value his defensive ability at all three outfield spots. Chris Coghlan will have a clearer role in the early going at least.

Sam Fuld underwent an MRI after feeling soreness in his right shoulder on a throw during Saturday's game.

The results of the exam aren't in yet. Fuld is competing for a bench spot and is out of options, so he can't afford a big setback.

Sam Fuld carried the load for Oakland’s offense on Friday by going 2-for-2 with a home run, four RBI, and a walk in a 9-4 win over the split-squad Reds.

Were you expecting somebody else? Fuld launched a three-run homer off Jon Moscot in the second inning before adding an RBI triple in the seventh. The 34-year-old batted just .197/.276/.293 over 325 plate appearances last season. Playing time is going to be hard to come by in 2016, but the Athletics still see value in him as a potential reserve outfielder.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Saturday that he still expects to find room for Sam Fuld in the club's outfield.

With the recent acquisitions of Khris Davis and Chris Coghlan, in addition to incumbent options Billy Burns, Josh Reddick and Coco Crisp, it's easy to see how Fuld could get squeezed out. He's a plus defender at all three outfield positions though, and given Crisp's injury history there's a chance he could beat him out for a spot on the Opening Day roster.
