Diamondbacks signed INF Tommy Manzella to a minor league contract.
The deal does not include an invitation to spring training. The 30-year-old shortstop hasn't appeared in the big leagues since he was a member of the Astros in 2010. He'll serve as nothing more than organizational depth for the D'Backs. Jan 11 - 9:49 AM

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Brewers have signed infielder Tommy Manzella to a minor league contract.

Manzella will provide some extra depth at the shortstop position now that Alex Gonzalez (knee) is done for the season. The 29-year-old hit just .225 with a .531 OPS in 83 games with the Astros in 2010 and spent all of last season in the minors. We're not expecting much.

Diamondbacks sent INF Tommy Manzella outright to Triple-A Reno.

He was cleared to make room for Jarrod Parker on the 40-man roster. Manzella was just claimed off waivers from the Astros last month. The 28-year-old shortstop batted just .232 with a .666 OPS over 485 plate appearances at the Triple-A level this season.

Diamondbacks claimed INF Tommy Manzella off waivers from the Astros.

Manzella was designated for assignment by the Astros on Wednesday. The 28-year-old is hitting .230/.319/.360 over 417 plate appearances at the Triple-A level this season and batted just .225 with a .531 OPS over 282 plate appearances with the Astros last season. He's no great shakes, but gives the D-Backs some organizational depth at the shortstop position in wake of Stephen Drew's ankle injury.

The Astros have brought back Tommy Manzella from minor league camp.

Manzella was optioned out Thursday but is back now with Clint Barmes on the shelf. He's not expected to start while Barmes is out, but he could now possibly make the team. Angel Sanchez and Matt Downs are expected to get the longest looks for the job, though Anderson Hernandez and Oswaldo Navarro are also in the mix.

Astros optioned INF Tommy Manzella, LHP Wesley Wright and OF Brian Bogusevic to Triple-A Oklahoma City; reassigned Cs Brian Esposito and Robinson Cancel to minor league camp.

What a difference a year makes. Manzella opened last season as the starting shortstop, though the Astros understandably soured on him after he batted just .225 with one home run, 21 RBI and a 71/13 K/BB ratio over 282 plate appearances. Bogusevic was competing for a reserve outfielder spot, which will likely go to either Jason Bourgeois or non-roster invitee J.B. Shuck.

Tommy Manzella will play in the Dominican Winter League this offseason.

The shortstop missed six weeks of the 2010 season because of a fractured index finger and will try to make up for the lost time down in the Dominican. He has hit just .234 since returning from the disabled list and has a .217/.258/.257 batting line with one home run in 253 at-bats overall.

Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle expects the Astros to use a carousel of middle infielders through the end of this season.

Platoons are never good for fantasy purposes and the Astros have quite a crowded one. Tommy Manzella, Geoff Blum, Anderson Hernandez, Angel Sanchez and Matt Downs will all share time at second base and shortstop because, as Levine says, there is such "little distinction" between their skill sets. Chris Johnson should start most nights at third and Brett Wallace will continue to work his way toward becoming the everyday first baseman.

Astros activated SS Tommy Manzella from the 15-day disabled list.

Manzella batted .366 during an 11-game rehab assignment between Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Round Rock. He has been on the disabled list since June 23 with a fractured left finger. The 27-year-old shortstop returns to a .212/.259/.254 batting line over 189 at-bats this season and may take a back seat to Angel Sanchez down the stretch.
