Cardinals signed C Brayan Peña to a two-year, $5 million contract.
Peña, who will turn 34 in January, offers the Cards an upgrade over Tony Cruz but doesn't figure to see a ton of playing time unless Yadier Molina gets hurt. He's a career .260/.300/.352 hitter and batted .273/.334/.324 with no home runs over 367 plate appearances for the Reds this past season. Mon, Nov 30, 2015 04:09:00 PM

Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports that the Braves have been in touch with free agent catcher Brayan Pena.

Pena was originally signed by the Braves and spent the first four years of his major league career with the club. He turns 34 in January and batted .273/.334/.324 over 367 plate appearances with the Reds this past season. The Braves have already re-signed A.J. Pierzynski, so adding Pena would put Christian Bethancourt's future in question.

Brayan Pena (hamstring) is back in Tuesday's lineup against the Cardinals.

Pena hasn't played since September 8 due to a strained right hamstring. He'll bat sixth against right-hander John Lackey.

Brayan Peña (hamstring) did some throwing drills and caught a bullpen session on Monday.

He still needs to run the bases before being cleared to return and it's unclear when that will happen. Peña has been limited to pinch-hitting duty for two weeks because of a strained right hamstring.

Brayan Pena (hamstring) appeared as pinch hitter in Friday's victory over the Brewers, grounding out in his lone at-bat.

He has been sidelined for a week due to an ailing right hamstring, but has made significant progress in recent days and could return to the starting lineup as early as Saturday. Though completely devoid of power, Pena has had a decent season at the dish for the Reds, slashing .281/.343/.332 with no home runs and 17 RBI in 310 at-bats.

Brayan Pena left Wednesday's game against the Pirates with an apparent hamstring injury.

Pena doubled to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning but pulled up and grabbed his right hamstring while cruising into second base. He was replaced by pinch-runner Ryan LaMarre. More should be known about Pena's injury after the contest.

Brayan Pena went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored as the Reds walked off winners against the Braves on Tuesday.

Pena has four consecutive multi-hit games and is now batting .356/.429/.411. He's gotten most of the starts behind the plate with Devin Mesoraco dealing with a hip impingement. Pena should continue to get playing time as long as he's hitting like this.

Brayan Peña (shoulder) went 1-for-4 with a single Monday against the Cubs.

Peña left Sunday's game against the Cardinals with a left shoulder injury after an awkward slide into first base. He probably would have had the night off Monday, but the Reds needed him with Devin Mesoraco (hip) sidelined. Either way, it sounds like he's fine.

Brayan Peña left Sunday's game against the Cardinals with a left shoulder injury.

Pena fell awkwardly into first base as he got caught in between whether to run or slide through the base as he beat out a bunt. He immediately grabbed his shoulder in pain before being removed for a pinch-runner. The Reds should update his status later Sunday.

Brayan Peña is back in the Reds' lineup Friday.

Pena had to be scratched Thursday because he was battling an ear infection. He's catching Friday, which means Devin Mesoraco (who was originally supposed to get a day off Thursday) is on the bench.

Brayan Pena had to be scratched from the Reds' starting lineup on Thursday due to illness.

Pena was set to catch Johnny Cueto with Devin Mesoraco taking a day off, but Mesoraco will now suit up. Pena should be ready to go on Friday. He's been seeing semi-regular starts at both catcher and first base.
