Brayan Pena clubbed two solo home runs in a loss to the Yankees on Friday.
Who needs Joey Votto, anyway? Filling in at first base on Friday, Pena is now the second player in Reds' history with a multi-homer game at Yankee Stadium. The other? Johnny Bench in Game 4 of the 1976 World Series. Pena doesn't inspire much enthusiasm in fantasy leagues, but he could be worth a shot in two-catcher NL-only leagues if the playing time is there. Brayan Pena had a pinch-hit go-ahead RBI single in Friday's 6-5 win over the Pirates.

The Pirates held a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Reds rallied for three runs on five hits against Tony Watson to take the lead. Pena's two-out single proved to be the difference. The 32-year-old has done a respectable job as Devin Mesoraco's backup this season, batting .257 with three home runs and a . 675 OPS over 63 games.

Brayan Pena (forearm) is in the Reds' starting lineup on Thursday afternoon against the Cubs.

Pena missed a couple of games with minor soreness in his right forearm. The 32-year-old is playing first base and batting cleanup Thursday for the injury-riddled Reds.

Brayan Peña (forearm) is expected to be in the lineup Wednesday.

Pena was dealing with soreness in his right forearm even before going on paternity leave, and he then sat out both games of Tuesday's doubleheader. The Reds are expected to use him as their primary first baseman while Joey Votto (quad) is out. "We were planning on giving him a couple of days of TLC, which he was able to get at home with his wife and new daughter, but I'd love to have him not do much for another day," manager Bryan Price said between games Tuesday. "I think it's a lot more probable that you'll see him more involved beginning (Wednesday)."

Reds activated C Brayan Pena from the paternity leave list.

Pena has been away from the team for the past couple of days. With Joey Votto going on the DL, the Reds are keeping Tucker Barnhart around as a third catcher.

Reds placed C Brayan Peña on the paternity leave list.

He can be away for up to three days. Tucker Barnhart has placed Pena on the Reds' roster.
Jul 6 - 10:53 AM

Brayan Pena was a late scratch from the Reds' starting lineup Saturday versus the Brewers.

He's a little banged up, but it should be nothing to worry about. "Pena is a usable piece today. It's nothing extreme," said Reds manager Bryan Price. "It just made more sense to have the guy that's closer to 100 percent behind the plate." Devin Mesoraco will get the start in his place.

Brayan Pena went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI as the Reds shutout the Giants 4-0 on Sunday.

Pena has seen his playing time dwindle in recent weeks with the return of Joey Votto, and the sizzling bat of Devin Mesoraco behind the plate. The veteran backstop is hitting .251/.287/.377 with three homers and 15 RBI on the year.
Jun 29 - 7:55 PM

Brayan Peña is back in the Reds' lineup Wednesday.

Pena missed Tuesday's game with a hamstring issue. He'll continue to serve as the Reds' primary catcher while Devin Mesoraco (hamstring) is on the DL.
May 7 - 2:43 PM

Brayan Peña didn't start Tuesday due to a hamstring injury.

Reds manager Bryan Price said Pena's hamstring is "tender," but he indicated the backstop was available off the bench. Tucker Barnhart will handle the catching duties until Pena is ready.
May 7 - 9:30 AM

Brayan Pena went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's loss to the Cubs.

Pena lifted a solo home run to right field off of Edwin Jackson in the second inning for his first homer of the season. Pena has hit well since taking over for the injured Devin Mesoraco on Saturday. He has four hits, including a double and a homer, in four games.
Apr 30 - 11:13 PM

Brayan Pena went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base as the Reds defeated the Pirates on Tuesday.

Pena got the start behind the dish to give Devin Mesoraco, who had caught four consecutive games, a breather. He rewarded the Reds with a couple of singles and his second stolen base of the season. Entering the season, Pena hadn't stolen a base since 2010. All in all, a nice night for the backup catcher.
Apr 22 - 10:06 PM

Brayan Peña went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored in Monday's loss to the Cardinals.

Pena cranked a couple doubles to the wall off a Michael Wacha and then ripped a single off of Carlos Martinez, so it wasn't as if his big day was a cheapie. His only misstep of the day was when he inexplicably tried to steal a base off Yadier Molina, though it's possible Billy Hamilton missed a hit-and-run sign. With Devin Mesoraco back, Pena's playing time is about to be cut.
Apr 7 - 8:15 PM

Reds signed C Brayan Pena to a two-year contract.

No word yet on the exact terms involved. Pena batted .297/.315/.397 with four homers and 22 RBI over 243 plate appearances this season with Detroit. His addition likely means that Ryan Hanigan is on the way out.

ESPN Deportes' Enrique Rojas reports that the Reds have signed Brayan Peña to a two-year contract.

Assuming he passes a physical on Tuesday, he'll earn a minimum of $1.25 million in 2014, but the rest of his deal isn't known yet. As ESPN's Buster Olney notes, bringing in Pena allows the Reds to either non-tender or trade Ryan Hanigan. Pena batted .297/.315/.397 with four homers and 22 RBI over 243 plate appearances this season as Alex Avila's backup in Detroit.
