Brayan Pena (knee) expects to resume most baseball activities next week.
Pena is now 23 days removed from surgery to remove loose cartilage from his left knee. The initial timetable was a month to six weeks. "Hopefully, next week I can go out there and start running on the field and taking some batting practice," the veteran catcher told Brian Stull's STL Baseball Weekly. "After that, it would be a decision for our training staff to see where we’re going from there." Pena signed a two-year, $5 million free agent contract with the Cardinals this offseason to serve as Yadier Molina's backup. Eric Fryer has been filling in. Apr 28 - 8:11 AM

Brayan Pena underwent surgery Tuesday to remove loose cartilage from his left knee.

He's expected to miss most or all of April. "It was just the loose particle, and it's where they thought it might be," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny told MLB.com on Tuesday evening. "It was in a spot that was going to continue to be an issue. I think it was the right move to get that extracted." Eric Fryer is serving as the Cards' backup catcher in Pena's absence.
Apr 5 - 8:19 PM

Cardinals placed C Brayan Pena on the 15-day disabled list with loose bodies in his left knee.

The veteran backstop will require surgery to alleviate the issue and is expected to miss 2-4 weeks. He sustained the injury when he slipped and fell in the visitor's dugout recently. Eric Fryer is expected to make the Opening Day roster as the backup to Yadier Molina.
Apr 2 - 2:10 PM

Brayan Pena is currently dealing with a knee injury and could be forced to begin the season on the disabled list.

Eric Fryer has joined the team and would take the place of Pena on the active roster if he isn't ready in time for Sunday's opener. The Cardinals should have an update on his status early Sunday.

Brayan Peña (arm) had one hit in two at-bats in his return to the lineup Saturday.

Peña missed some time with a bit of tightness in his right arm, but he's much better. The veteran backstop could start for the Cardinals on Opening Day if Yadier Molina (thumb) isn't ready.
Mar 20 - 9:23 AM

Brayan Peña (arm) will play catch from 120 feet on Friday.

Peña has a bit of tightness in his right arm, forcing him to be scratched from Thursday's lineup. He should ultimately be fine, but the Cardinals figure to take it easy on him for a few days.
Mar 18 - 10:01 AM

Brayan Pena will sit out Thursday's game against the Tigers because of arm tightness.

The tightness is in his throwing arm. Mike Ohlman will grab the start in Pena's place. Pena should be back in the lineup Friday. That game is also against Detroit.
Mar 17 - 12:41 PM

Cardinals signed C Brayan Peña to a two-year, $5 million contract.

Peña, who will turn 34 in January, offers the Cards an upgrade over Tony Cruz but doesn't figure to see a ton of playing time unless Yadier Molina gets hurt. He's a career .260/.300/.352 hitter and batted .273/.334/.324 with no home runs over 367 plate appearances for the Reds this past season.

Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports that the Braves have been in touch with free agent catcher Brayan Pena.

Pena was originally signed by the Braves and spent the first four years of his major league career with the club. He turns 34 in January and batted .273/.334/.324 over 367 plate appearances with the Reds this past season. The Braves have already re-signed A.J. Pierzynski, so adding Pena would put Christian Bethancourt's future in question.

Pena hasn't played since September 8 due to a strained right hamstring. He'll bat sixth against right-hander John Lackey.

Brayan Peña (hamstring) did some throwing drills and caught a bullpen session on Monday.

He still needs to run the bases before being cleared to return and it's unclear when that will happen. Peña has been limited to pinch-hitting duty for two weeks because of a strained right hamstring.

Brayan Pena (hamstring) appeared as pinch hitter in Friday's victory over the Brewers, grounding out in his lone at-bat.

He has been sidelined for a week due to an ailing right hamstring, but has made significant progress in recent days and could return to the starting lineup as early as Saturday. Though completely devoid of power, Pena has had a decent season at the dish for the Reds, slashing .281/.343/.332 with no home runs and 17 RBI in 310 at-bats.
