Cardinals placed C Brayan Pena on the 15-day disabled list with left knee inflammation.

This is a troublesome one, as Pena underwent an early April surgery to remove loose cartilage from his left knee. He was just activated off the disabled list on June 28. The Cardinals have yet to name a timetable for the 34-year-old backstop's recovery.

Brayan Peña announced on Twitter that he plans to join the United States Army Reserve this offseason.

Pena became an American citizen in 2008 after defecting from Cuba in 1999. The age cutoff for the Army Reserve is 35 so Pena (34) is getting his service time in just before the buzzer. It's unclear what this means for Pena's baseball career, though at his age, this could be it for him in the major leagues. Pena missed most of the first half this season while recovering from knee surgery.

Pena has been out all season after undergoing surgery in early April to remove loose cartilage from his left knee, but he's finally ready to serve as Yadier Molina's backup. Eric Fryer was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the active roster.

Brayan Pena (knee) has been excused from his rehab assignment due to a personal matter.

Pena is expected to return to Double-A Springfield within a few days. He's just 3-for-19 (.158) through six rehab games and probably won't be activated until sometime next week. St. Louis signed the veteran catcher to a two-year, $5 million free agent contract this winter to serve as Yadier Molina's backup, but Pena hasn't played a game yet for the Cardinals. He needed surgery in early April to remove loose cartilage from his left knee.

Brayan Pena (knee) expects to resume most baseball activities next week.

Pena is now 23 days removed from surgery to remove loose cartilage from his left knee. The initial timetable was a month to six weeks. "Hopefully, next week I can go out there and start running on the field and taking some batting practice," the veteran catcher told Brian Stull's STL Baseball Weekly. "After that, it would be a decision for our training staff to see where we’re going from there." Pena signed a two-year, $5 million free agent contract with the Cardinals this offseason to serve as Yadier Molina's backup. Eric Fryer has been filling in.
Apr 28 - 8:11 AM

Brayan Pena underwent surgery Tuesday to remove loose cartilage from his left knee.

He's expected to miss most or all of April. "It was just the loose particle, and it's where they thought it might be," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny told MLB.com on Tuesday evening. "It was in a spot that was going to continue to be an issue. I think it was the right move to get that extracted." Eric Fryer is serving as the Cards' backup catcher in Pena's absence.

Apr 2 - 2:10 PM

Brayan Pena is currently dealing with a knee injury and could be forced to begin the season on the disabled list.

Mar 18 - 10:01 AM

Brayan Pena will sit out Thursday's game against the Tigers because of arm tightness.

The tightness is in his throwing arm. Mike Ohlman will grab the start in Pena's place. Pena should be back in the lineup Friday. That game is also against Detroit.
