Royals signed OF Johermyn Chavez to a minor league contract.
Chavez once hit 32 home runs and racked up 96 RBI in High-A ball in 2010, but he's struggled since. Those struggles include a .206/.306/.270 line in 24 games with the Cubs' Double-A affiliate this past season. The 24-year-old will serve as organizational depth. Sat, Dec 14, 2013 07:04:00 PM

Cubs signed OF Johermyn Chavez to a minor league contract.

Chavez showed lots of potential in the lower minors with the Mariners but was unable to continue to hit as he moved up the ladder. He's still just 23, so perhaps the Cubs can coax something out of him.

Mariners optioned OF Johermyn Chavez to Double-A Jackson.

Chavez had a terrific year on A-ball in 2010 but batted just .216/.312/.360 in his first taste of Double-A last year. He's clearly in need of more seasoning before a big league promotion is in order.

Johermyn Chavez homered in the top of the ninth Monday as the Mariners and Padres played to a 6-6 tie.

Chavez might prove to be the saving grace of the Brandon Morrow trade for the Mariners. He follwed up at .315/.387/.577 season in A-ball last year with an excellent winter league campaign, and he already has a homer and a double in five at-bats this spring. The 22-year-old will open the season in Double-A.

Mariners outfield prospect Johermyn Chavez is batting .314/.422/.500 over 70 at-bats in the Venezuelan Winter League.

Chavez was acquired last December when the Mariners traded Brandon Morrow to the Blue Jays and has really taken off in the Mariners' farm system. The 21-year-old hit .315/.387/.577 with 32 home runs and 109 runs scored this year in 136 games at the Single-A level and has an excellent outfield throwing arm. He's likely to kick off the 2011 season at Double-A.

Mariners acquired OF Yohermyn Chavez and RHP Brandon League from the Blue Jays for RHP Brandon Morrow.

He's not Zach Stewart, Brett Wallace or even J.P. Arencibia, but that doesn't mean Chavez isn't without some promise. Checking in at 6'3" and 220 lbs, the 20-year-old outfielder batted .283/.346/.474 with 21 home runs and an .821 OPS with Class A Lansing in 2009. That said, he's still a bit raw, whiffing 137 times in 508 plate appearances (27 percent), a bit discouraging for his second full season in low-A ball. Jack Z has made many splashes this winter already, but this wasn't a pickup with instant gratification in mind.

Jordan Bastain of MLB.com hears that the Blue Jays will send prospect outfielder Yohermyn Chavez along with right-hander Brandon League to complete the trade with the Mariners for right-hander Brandon Morrow.

It's not yet confirmed, but at least he's a more intriguing talent than catcher Brian Jeroloman, who was tossed around as a possibility earlier today. Chavez, who turns 21 in January, batted .283/.346/.474 with 21 home runs and an .821 OPS with Class A Lansing in 2009, but also struck out 137 times in 569 plate appearances. He wasn't ranked in the organization's Top 10 prospects, according to Baseball America.

Yohermyn Chavez went 3-for-5 with a triple, a double and four RBI for low Single-A Lansing on Friday.

Chavez was a bust at Lansing last season, hitting .211/.272/.323 with 128 strikeouts in 402 at-bats, but he's off to a .391/.420/.761 start in 46 at-bats this season. Given that he's just 20 years old, he's still rather intriguing.

Yohermyn Chavez went 3-for-5 with two homers Sunday for low Single-A Lansing.

The Jays have had high hopes for Chavez since signing him out of Venezuela in 2005, but they're only now giving him his first taste of full-season ball. He hit .301/.389/.494 as an 18-year-old in Rookie ball last season.
