Tigers released INF Cale Iorg.
Iorg was once fairly highly thought of, but he's batted just .217/.269/.338 over six seasons. The 27-year-old will look to catch on elsewhere. Fri, Apr 5, 2013 01:42:00 PM

Tigers sent SS Cale Iorg outright to Triple-A Toledo.

Iorg's odds of becoming even a utility player at the major league level are growing longer each year after he batted just .199/.245/.306 with seven homers over 396 at-bats between Double- and Triple-A this season. The 26-year-old should return to Triple-A to start 2012.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland stated that Cale Iorg has a bright future in the majors if his hitting improves.

This could be a tall order for Iorg, who has a rich baseball pedigree (his father and uncle were major leaguers) but a poor batting history (.228/.283/.358 career minor league hitter). The 25-year-old likely will start the season at Triple-A Toledo.

Tigers purchased the contract of SS Cale Iorg from Triple-A Toledo.

Iorg has never finished a season with an OPS better than 734 and projects only as a backup utility infielder. Still, the Tigers wanted to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft. He batted .242/.271/.409 with one home run and nine RBI in 70 plate appearances this year at Triple-A Toledo.

Single-A Lakeland's Cal Iorg homered, droubled and collected four RBI on Tuesday.

Iorg is only up to 80 at-bats as a pro, but he might be the top position prospect in a weak Detroit farm system. The 22-year-old is batting .314/.375/.510 for Lakeland. If he can finish with something in the neighborhood of that line, it'd be a very impressive showing for a guy who barely played the previous two seasons.
