Darwin Barney went 3-for-4 with a home run as the Cubs fell to the Rockies on Tuesday.

Barney did his part to help the cause, contributing a solo homer in the fifth inning and a run-scoring double in the ninth. The second baseman ended up just a triple shy of the cycle. Impressive night aside, Barney is still a non-factor outside of NL-only leagues.

Cubs GM Jed Hoyer reiterated Saturday that slumping second baseman Darwin Barney is in no danger of being demoted to Triple-A.

Hoyer said that Barney has earned "a lot of" playing time, and that the organization will have "quite a bit" of patience with him. He's been absolutely dreadful at the plate thus far, hitting .149/.276/.257 with one homer and three RBI through his first 22 games. He shouldn't be started in even the deepest fantasy leagues.

It sounds like a routine day of rest for Barney. Luis Valbuena will play second base Wednesday while Cody Ransom starts at third.

Darwin Barney - 2B - Cubs

Darwin Barney doubled twice and drove in two runs Monday in the Cubs' 5-3 victory over the Padres.

Barney had one RBI in 42 at-bats this season before coming through with a nice game tonight. He's locked in as a starter because of his defense, but he has minimal fantasy value in NL-only leagues while hitting at the bottom of the Cubs' order.

Cubs activated 2B Darwin Barney from the 15-day disabled list.

He'll bat seventh in his return Tuesday. Barney was forced to begin the season on the disabled list after he suffered a deep gash in his knee at the end of spring training, but he's back to 100 percent. The 27-year-old doesn't offer much from a fantasy perspective, but the Cubs value him for his excellent defense at second base.

Darwin Barney (knee) went 4-for-5 with a double Monday in a rehab game with Triple-A Iowa.

Barney went 5-for-10 during his brief three-game rehab stint. He's expected to be activated from the disabled list Tuesday when the Cubs begin an interleague series against the Rangers.

Darwin Barney (knee) is aiming to rejoin the Cubs' lineup on Tuesday.

Barney will have the stitches in his left knee removed Friday and will began a three-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa. Assuming he gets through that alright, he'll be in the lineup Tuesday against the Rangers. Alberto Gonzalez will likely be sent down at that point.

Darwin Barney (knee) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday at Triple-A Iowa.

Barney was placed on the 15-day disabled list April 1 with a deep gash in his left knee. He has already been cleared to resume all baseball activities and is getting his stitches removed Friday. If all goes well, Barney will be in the Cubs' starting lineup early next week.

Barney will have the stitches in his left knee removed this week and could begin a rehab assignment Friday with Low-A Kane County. He should rejoin the Cubs sometime around mid-April.

Cubs placed 2B Darwin Barney on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 31, with a left knee injury.

Barney suffered a deep gash on his knee while trying to track down a foul ball Saturday during an exhibition game at Houston's Minute Maid Park. He needed five stitches, and those stitches now need time to do their job. The second baseman should be ready around mid-April.

Darwin Barney has been ruled out for Opening Day because of a gash on his knee that required stitches.

Barney suffered the deep cut while trying to track down a foul ball during a Cactus League game. The Cubs haven't determined yet whether he will need a 15-day disabled list stint. Barney batted .254/.299/.354 in 2012 but earned Gold Glove honors for his defense at second base. Brent Lillibridge will fill in for him.
