Blue Jays and INF Darwin Barney avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.8875 million contract.
It's a generous raise from his $1.05 million salary from 2016. The 31-year-old batted .269/.332/.373 with four home runs and 19 RBI over 104 games last season while serving in a utility role. He even pitched an inning of relief. He should be an active bench player again in 2017. Jan 12 - 5:10 PM

Blue Jays placed INF Darwin Barney on the family medical emergency list.

Barney should join back up with the club for Friday night's series opener against the Rays at Tropicana Field. Ryan Goins will replace him on the active roster.

Darwin Barney will be excused from the Blue Jays on Wednesday for personal reasons.

Barney shouldn't be gone more than a day or two. Ryan Goins will be called up from Triple-A Buffalo to give the Blue Jays infield depth.

Darwin Barney went 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored versus the Yankees on Wednesday.

Going from Troy Tulowitzki to Barney at shortstop has been an upgrade for the Jays so far. Barney is hitting .344 in his 90 at-bats this season.

Darwin Barney had a nice day at the plate in Saturday's loss to the Dodgers, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Barney didn't seem fazed by having to face Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw on Saturday and made the most of his three at-bats. He has been outstanding in his limited action this year, slashing .357/.400/.452 with five RBI.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Tuesday that Darwin Barney will begin platooning with Ryan Goins at second base.

Goins is batting just .160/.200/.235 in 85 plate appearances this season and is probably going to sit against left-handed pitchers moving forward. Barney isn't much of a hitter either, but he is excellent defensively. Devon Travis (shoulder) is still a couple weeks away.

With Russell Martin still out with neck stiffness, Darwin Barney will serve as the Blue Jays' emergency catcher.

The Blue Jays will have to make a roster move if the injury lingers, but for now, they're sticking with Josh Thole at catcher. Barney has never played catcher in a major league game. Josh Donaldson has made 10 big league appearances at catcher but manager John Gibbons said he wouldn't risk putting his best player behind the plate.

Darwin Barney got a rare start and belted a solo homer against the Athletics on Friday, ultimately going 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI.

Barney actually opened the scoring for the Blue Jays in the third inning and was their most consistent offensive producer all night. Even though he won't have too many big nights at the dish, the 30-year-old will surprise folks with a homer from time to time. He's now hitting .294/.400/.471 in very limited playing time.

Darwin Barney drove in all five Blue Jays runs Tuesday in a 5-3 defeat of the Phillies.

It would have been six if Richard Urena didn't get thrown out at home. Barney doubled twice and singled in his three at-bats before being lifted. He figures to be the Blue Jays' primary utilityman until Devon Travis returns. At that point, Travis could take over at second base, pushing Ryan Goins back to utility duties.

Blue Jays re-signed INF Darwin Barney to a one-year, $1.05 million contract.

The career .246/.294/.339 hitter was up briefly with the Blue Jays last season after coming over in a trade with the Dodgers. Barney will compete for a utility infielder job in spring training.

According to Sportsnet's Shi Davidi, Darwin Barney and the Blue Jays have agreed to a one-year major league contract pending a physical.

Barney came over to the Blue Jays from the Dodgers in the middle of September. Between the two clubs, he saw just 15 games of action at the major league level. He was outrighted to Triple-A Buffalo on October 23 and subsequently elected free agency. It looked like he would probably have to settle for a minor league deal with a spring training invite, but the Blue Jays have opted to bring him back on a reported major league contract of one year. The 30-year-old infielder's a career .246/.294/.339 hitter.

Darwin Barney has elected free agency.

The 29-year-old infielder appeared in only 15 games at the big league level between the Dodgers and Blue Jays in 2015, slashing .259/.286/.519 with a pair of homers and four RBI in just 27 at-bats. He may have to settle for a minor league deal with spring training invite this winter.

Blue Jays sent INF Darwin Barney outright to Triple-A Buffalo.

He had been designated for assignment but has cleared waivers. Barney has the option of declaring free agency if he wants.

Blue Jays designated INF Darwin Barney for assignment.

Barney's being designated for assignment because the club picked up reliever Pat Venditte off waivers. The Jays acquired Barney from the Dodgers in mid-September in exchange for catcher Jack Murphy. In 27 at-bats between the two teams, the 29-year-old infielder hit .259/.286/.519 with two homers, a double and four RBI.
