According to Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca, Dan Johnson is learning to throw a knuckleball.
Johnson has been toying with the pitch for a while, but he began to get more serious about it in 2013. As someone who turned 35 in August and has bounced back and forth from the majors to the minors, the hope is that his work on the pitch will allow him to hang around a bit longer. "Why not have something else in the bag? Give yourself every chance," said Johnson. "I’m not 24 anymore. I want to help out as much as possible and still be relevant in this game." Johnson became a free agent earlier this month and should be able to latch on somewhere as a spring training invite. Oct 9 - 5:10 PM

Date:

Dan Johnson has elected free agency.

The 35-year-old was outrighted off the 40-man roster earlier in the week. He struggled in his 15 games with the Blue Jays in 2014, and slashed .232/.381/.434 with 18 homers and 56 games in 107 contests at Triple-A Buffalo. He'll look to secure a minor league deal and spring training invitation elsewhere.
Oct 4 - 1:04 PM

Blue Jays sent 1B/DH Dan Johnson outright to Triple-A Buffalo.

Outrighting Johnson clears a spot on the Jays' 40-man roster. Johnson appeared in 15 games with the Jays this season, hitting .211/.333/.342.
Oct 1 - 8:08 PM

Blue Jays activated 1B/DH Dan Johnson from the 15-day disabled list.

Johnson missed all of August with a left hamstring strain. He'll provide some pop off the bench in September.
Sep 2 - 11:32 AM

Blue Jays placed 1B/DH Dan Johnson on the disabled list with a hamstring strain.

Johnson has acted as an emergency bat to plug multiple injury holes in Toronto's lineup, posting a .235/.349/.382 slash line in limited at-bats. He might not be needed again once healthy.
Jul 31 - 3:04 PM

Dan Johnson homered and drove home four runs on Saturday, powering the Blue Jays to a 6-4 victory over the Yankees in New York.

Johnson broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI single off Shawn Kelley in the seventh inning, then provided much needed insurance with a three-run blast off Jeff Francis in the ninth. With Adam Lind hopeful to return next week, Johnson's brief run of fantasy usefulness may be coming to an end shortly.
Jul 26 - 4:39 PM

Dan Johnson knocked in two runs in a win over the Rangers on Saturday.

Johnson had an RBI double in the fourth inning and later added a sacrifice fly in the seventh. The 34-year-old journeyman is getting a chance to fill in at first base due to injuries to Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Lind, but the playoff hopeful Blue Jays will undoubtedly attempt to find another bat via trade leading up to July 31.
Jul 19 - 4:49 PM

Blue Jays purchased the contract of 1B/DH Dan Johnson from Triple-A Buffalo.

They need someone to take the roster spot of Adam Lind (foot), who is headed to the DL. Johnson has batted .248/.402/.471 with 17 homers over 94 games this season for Triple-A Buffalo. He would figure to see plenty of playing time at first base and the DH spot and is worth scooping up in AL-only leagues.
Jul 11 - 10:28 AM

Dan Johnson hit his third spring homer Tuesday in the Blue Jays' 3-2 victory over the Tigers.

Three-quarters of Johnson's hits have been homers, but that's no so far off the norm. In the last four seasons, he has 40 hits in 222 major league at-bats, 12 of them homers. Even though his ability to supply the long ball could be useful off the bench, there won't be room for him on the Blue Jays unless someone gets hurt.
Mar 11 - 5:51 PM

Blue Jays signed 1B Dan Johnson to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Johnson had just five at-bats at the major league level this past season but hit .250/.378/.439 with 21 homers at Triple-A for the Yankees and Orioles. He's likely to begin the 2014 season back at Triple-A.

Orioles signed 1B/DH Dan Johnson to a minor league contract.

It comes after Johnson opted out of his minor league deal with the Yankees on Thursday. The owner of a .253/.379/.447 batting line with 21 homers and 69 RBI at Triple-A this season, he'll likely be up as a bench bat next month.

Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com reports that the Orioles are the "possible favorite" to sign Dan Johnson.

Johnson opted out of his minor league deal with the Yankees on Thursday and could be on the verge of a major league deal with Baltimore. The O's are trying to land Michael Morse to fill their need for a right-handed hitter, but apparently they'd like to add some pop from the left side, as well.
