Dodgers signed RHP Dan Johnson to a minor league contract.
The 37-year-old Johnson played 10 years in the majors as a hitter/position player, but these days he's a knuckleball pitcher. He just finished up a stint with the independent St. Paul Saints where he posted a 4.50 ERA and 27/20 K/BB ratio over 40 innings. The Dodgers' brass know Johnson well from his time with the Rays and are willing to take a look at him. Aug 22 - 5:21 PM

Rays released RHP Dan Johnson.

Johnson was trying to convert from a first baseman into a knuckleballer this spring in Rays camp, but it apparently didn't go so well. It's not clear what might be next for the 36-year-old veteran. Retirement?

Rays signed P Dan Johnson to a minor league contract.

The deal is pending a physical. Johnson, who once had a three-home run game for the White Sox in 2012, is abandoning first base to begin a career as a knuckleball pitcher. "It's not the first time I've tried this out but this is the first time I feel like I can take it seriously," said Johnson. The 36-year-old has made 443 major league appearances for seven different teams since debuting in 2005.

Bill Chastain of MLB.com reports that the Rays are expected to sign Dan Johnson to a minor league deal with the idea that he's converting from a first baseman to a knuckleballer.

The odds of the 36-year-old making a successful conversion at this stage of his career are pretty low, but there's really no risk on the Rays end. Johnson is a career .234/.335/.405 hitter with 57 homers over 443 games across 10 major league seasons.

Dan Johnson has elected to become a free agent.

Johnson had just three hits -- all singles -- in 21 plate appearances this season with the Cardinals. The 36-year-old first baseman is going to have to settle for a non-guaranteed minor league contract this winter if he wants to continue his playing career.

Cardinals sent 1B Dan Johnson outright to Triple-A Memphis.

The veteran first baseman passed through waivers unclaimed and has opted to remain with the Cardinals as opposed to electing free agency. The 35-year-old is hitting .242/.350/.427 with 11 homers and 44 RBI at Triple-A this season.

Cardinals designated 1B Dan Johnson for assignment.

Johnson managed just three hits -- all singles -- in 21 plate appearances with the Cardinals. The 35-year-old will probably pass through waivers unclaimed.

Dan Johnson had two hits and two RBI in his Cardinals debut Wednesday against the Cubs.

It'll be interesting to see what the Cardinals do with Johnson. He was added in large part because of Kolten Wong's injury, but the team isn't getting much from Mark Reynolds or Xavier Scruggs. Another nice game or two could result in Johnson sticking around at Scruggs' expense.

Cardinals purchased the contract of 1B Dan Johnson from Triple-A Memphis.

Johnson has batted .242/.350/.427 with 11 homers and 44 RBI at the Triple-A level this season. With Mark Reynolds struggling of late, he could see some playing time at first base against right-handers.

Cardinals signed 1B Dan Johnson to a minor league contract; assigned him to Triple-A Memphis.

Johnson was released by the Reds in late April after managing just two hits in 40 plate appearances at Triple-A Louisville. The 35-year-old first baseman hasn't been an effective major leaguer since 2007.

Reds released 1B Dan Johnson.

The 35-year-old failed to earn a spot on the Astros Opening Day bench, then hit .069 (2-for-29) in his nine games at Triple-A Louisville. It's unclear if he'll explore opportunities elsewhere or decide to hang up his spikes.

Reds acquired 1B Dan Johnson from the Astros for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Johnson, 35, was batting .158 in 25 plate appearances this spring with the Astros. He'll head to the minor league side of Reds camp and won't be in consideration for the Opening Day roster.

Astros signed 1B Dan Johnson to a minor league contract.

It presumably comes along with an invitation to spring training. Johnson made it up for 15 games with the Blue Jays in 2014 and slashed .232/.381/.434 with 18 homers and 56 games in 107 contests at Triple-A Buffalo. He's simply a depth add for the Astros.

According to Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca, Dan Johnson is learning to throw a knuckleball.

Johnson has been toying with the pitch for a while, but he began to get more serious about it in 2013. As someone who turned 35 in August and has bounced back and forth from the majors to the minors, the hope is that his work on the pitch will allow him to hang around a bit longer. "Why not have something else in the bag? Give yourself every chance," said Johnson. "I’m not 24 anymore. I want to help out as much as possible and still be relevant in this game." Johnson became a free agent earlier this month and should be able to latch on somewhere as a spring training invite.

Dan Johnson has elected free agency.

The 35-year-old was outrighted off the 40-man roster earlier in the week. He struggled in his 15 games with the Blue Jays in 2014, and slashed .232/.381/.434 with 18 homers and 56 games in 107 contests at Triple-A Buffalo. He'll look to secure a minor league deal and spring training invitation elsewhere.
